Why does "ie" turn "dog" into itty bitty "doggie"? In this Lingthusiasm zine, Leah Velleman gets enthusiastic about diminutives. Yes, this one is extra tiny, it's a diminutive zine about diminutives! A zinelet? Or zineling? For more lingthusiastic zines: lingthusiasm.com/zines

Just in case you still use any Basecamp products, DHH is crashing out about his AI product gently pointing out that it’s bad for him to have extermination fantasies about the Roma people.

DHH tweet saying “This is why we need competition and open weights in Al. Imagine a world where only Anthropic sat as the moral arbiter of acceptable speech. Fucking ridiculous. (Grok of course did it no problem, same too with Kimi K).” when presented with his blog post using a slur about the Roma people.

The Museum of Buttons. The kind you press, not the clothing kind or the pin kind. Exhibits on the evolution of industrial control surfaces. A whole wing of aircraft cockpits. A computer and typewriter keyboard exhibit. And just lots of fun buttons, knobs, levers, switches, and other doohickeys.

THE WIZARD IS BACK! You have been cursed with a lot of money! You are going to become not just permanently brain damaged, but SUPER evil, incapable of doing good, if you use the money for anything that isn't ridiculous. To break the curse, you must spend it on something ridiculous. What say you?

A wholesome story for nerds: On Saturday, I was signing books at a local bookstore for Independent Bookstore Day. The store had a signing-palooza with new authors every hour; toward the end of my hour, a woman came up and asked what my book was about. "Dictionaries," I said, and she lit up. 1/n

In 1999, I was playing a decker in Shadowrun, and tried to distract a guard by hacking a water fountain to overflow, and my GM said "why would a water fountain be on the network? That's fucking stupid. No you can't try." Well it's 2026 and I just want you to know, Phil, that I FUCKING CALLED IT!

A flatscreen display on a "smart" water fountain, demanding to be reconnected to the internet.

i know, i know, but it's honestly pretty amazing that (so far as i can tell) not a single Republican elected official, at any level, has publicly broken with Trump over his threat to annihilate the people of Iran at 8pm today

Donald Trump threatening the destruction of an entire civilization is madness. He is completely unfit to serve as President of the United States. Invoke the 25th Amendment. Or Republicans must stand up with us to impeach him. We cannot allow him to set fire to the world.

Impeachment is not some special exception from normal politics where you shouldn't say it unless you already have the votes in hand. You go out and plainly advocate what you think should be done, and attack those who refuse to do it, just like on anything else.

If this is real. If his thumbs actually typed what is below... Citizens. Senators. Cabinet. The President of the United States is out of control. He is beyond reason or amelioration. We might really, really, really, I'm trying not to shout or capitalize here, really want to address this.

The President of the U.S. The man with the nuclear codes. And people are just going to pretend this is ok. In a functioning society, he would be removed from office within hours by his own party.

what next? what, are we gonna provide *roads* for the wealthy too? gonna have health inspectors keep contaminants out of their groceries? are we just gonna have gutters and sewer systems around rich people's homes?

Boy, what a terrible headline. We *need* the wealthy to participate in public services. If only poor people ride the bus, then rich people won't wield their power in support of public transit or, worse, will wield their power *against* it.

Every time I make lentils this bugs the crap out of me. How many cups of lentils are in this bag? If you believe that there are about 13 servings per bag, and each serving is 1/4 cup: About 3.25 But if you believe the cooking directions: About 2!

Nutrition facts from bag of lentils, with "About 13 servings per container. Serving size: 1/4 cup dry (35g)" circledCooking directions from the same bag of lentils, with "for each pound of lentils (about 2 cups)" highlighted. The same bag of lentils, clearly labeled as a 1 pound (16 oz, 454 grams) bag.

See, people get involved in local politics for 5 basic reasons: ego, they're immensely pissed off about something (can be complimentary or derogatory), they are looking to grift, they want to start a political career, or they are legitimately interested in policy and governance (weirdos, minority).

"Last week, a man called me an 'entitled jackass.' I smiled. In that moment, I became his mirror, reflecting the parts of himself he hasn’t yet forgiven. His horn was his confession. My lane change was his redemption arc."

Hi, my name’s Kyle. Yes, I get in whatever lane has fewer cars and then merge. I merge late so others can practice forgiveness. I don’t see it as c...
