As much as radicals get criticized for being "unrealistic," demanding entire demographics facing literal genocide always maintain mild rhetoric and actions is an absolutely delusional level of conformity to expect. I don't think that gets said enough.
Same with gender-affirming care for kids. Good-faith concern would be, "gee we should be making sure kids are appropriately assessed before receiving care and don't end up regretting it," realizing the numbers are tiny, kids are assessed and regret rates are miniscule and then dropping it.

Seeing "trans kids given deadline to segregate themselves" and "trans women banned from yet another part of society" headlines *every single day* while everyone you know and every organization stays breathtakingly silent takes such a damn toll on your heart.

It is so hard to be trans right now, y’all. Like, I can’t speak for everyone but I’m white-knuckling it pretty much constantly at this point. I hope cis people are understanding how much is at stake for us in this moment: It’s literally our right to exist as ourselves that is being stripped away.

This is the other thing. If you talk to trans people, regret at not transitioning earlier is almost universal. Meanwhile, no one has been able to produce any evidence of kids being rushed into premature or inappropriate transitions beyond anecdata connected to right wing activism.

Well now I've gone and done it. AI does have a benefit*: mass creation of dumpster fire codebases that someone will have to pay me to fix someday. *if your only concern is my future job prospects

Using it makes your codebase worse. the bright side for me is that my growing expertise in fixing bad AI code might make it easier for me to find employers willing to hire a trans woman next time I need a job.

If ever any of my family comes back to me to "apologize" for rejecting me and my transness, it will not be that they made a mistake. It will be some article that pretends long-established science is brand new so they can latch onto it and say, "the scientists got it wrong before, but now they know!"

While working on this piece, I couldn't forget the wave of harassment trans journalists got here mid-2024 when we spoke up about the NYT's transphobia and the complicity of major figures there. We need a lot less reverence for institutions, and a lot more listening to folks on the front lines.

Cis people really have no idea how it feels to watch a regime hold a press conference to admit, on camera, the pogrom against trans people they've been waging for 11 months is not only real, but they're going to double down on genocide and try to wipe out all the children first.
And trans people: if you need help, remember that you need to ASK for it for people to know you need help. Take up space. You deserve it. Ask for help. You deserve it. Talk to your trans community. We’ll be there for you. You are not alone. Trans love forever.
