read the first two "Culture" series books while vacationing, and though they are ripping yarns and perfect beach reads (especially Consider Phlebas) the standard view amongst the technology brothers that they are somehow serious looks at a plausible (if deep) future never really occurred to me

i do think there is a degree of deserved poo-poohing that police/prison abolitionists have earned through their inability to articulate their ideas in a readable way but i find it very funny when that comes from americans who believe in equally insane shit like "a for-profit healthcare system"
