In the latest Video Game History Hour podcast, our library director Phil Salvador sits down with Blizzard’s senior digital archivist, Leah Williams, to discuss her critical work of preserving their modern video game history: https://gamehistory.org/episode-161-blizzard-digital-vault/
I don't care if it's an FPGA console, a DAC, an upscaler, a flash cart, or even a fancy mod. If the people behind it suck, then don't buy into it! Plain and simple. Their is no ifs, ands, or buts about it (unless you didn't know about the connection prior, then that can be forgiven if you repent).
If you loved the first bit of Grandia's spirit of adventure as much as I do, I think we'll both enjoy London Spirit Detectives for PS1. Looks and sounds adorable. Another no-AI translation (tools included) hot off the presses. 🔥
I am very proud to announce that our English translation patch of London Spirit Detectives is now done and released on GitHub. Thanks to aishsha, bigbanana23, Cash Ogawa, Pennywise, Ryusui, TheMajinZenki and vervalkon What a wonderful project! See reply for details.

Somebody asked me on Reddit why people who use AI to generate Recomp projects are currently being rejected from the communities and what they can do to fix this. I might tweak parts of this to be a more general blog post at some point, but this should be of help to anyone in a similar situation.
there's some weird deeply psychological thing with these people who, despite being clearly not wanted from a place, obsess over it. they have been denied something, and that is in actuality the greatest possible crime
A few people have wanted to know how this works: the mechanism is pretty simple. The site checks if your browser says it's coming from one of these sites. If so, you get the "AI loser" page. The link on the page strips out the "utm_source" parameter and referrer, so you only see it once.
A bit of a more unique post: The site's ChatGPT source prevention screen!
With today being the actual day "There Will Come Soft Rains" by Ray Bradbury takes place, I was going to share the haunting Soviet adaptation – only to find that version takes place later this year on December 31. That should be a fun way to welcome the new year.

After four days of bruteforcing and spending over $900, the FULL version of FFVII Dirge of Cerberus Lost Episode has been preserved by @yuvi.app! The game's SD card data, which it fully relies on, remained encrypted until now. Despite being 9MB, the game contains cutscenes and voice acting.
this is the full game about magnifying horses. Horse Magnifier: The Full Horse comes out on August 10, 2026. i made a trailer to celebrate the occasion:
Today is another special day. I am so proud to say I have finally recovered the FULL copy of Dirge of Cerberus Lost Episode for Japanese cell phones. After many years of this avoiding us, it's been done. youtu.be/UfpwhMTwMgM

www.gofundme.com/f/fund-expen... Hey! We have the last Aerosmith: Quest For Fame in the world. We're trying to crowdfund to cover the expenses to preserve it. This is a unique piece of rhythm game history, and we plan to place it in a public arcade! Any support would be wildly appreciated!
Some fresh positive news in fan translations. The GitHub makes it clear no LLM/AI involved at all from tools to the script.

I'm trembling while writing this: Kamaitachi no yoru—not the PC remake, not the iOS port, but the actual original SFC version—has been translated at last by ButThouMust, who graciously brought us an English patch for Otogirisou in the past. This is HISTORICAL.
A Yuuyami Doori Tankentai English fan-translation patch is underway. This project will involve a brand new, human (non-AI) translation with an eye for capturing the way that students would naturally speak in the '90s. @dungeonchill.bsky.social Thanks for bringing this game to my attention!
We need more of these notes at the forefront from other projects.
Also, according to the notes on the GitHub page: "No generative AI or LLMs have touched, nor will touch, any part of this translation project. All code for my custom tools, all ASM hacks, all graphics edits, and particularly the translated script, were created manually." 💖
