paranoid dork living in WA. they/them.

It’s completely nuts that Trump won by less than 2M votes with near universal media help and worldwide rage at incumbents and the media treated this like a permanent sea change towards MAGA and now less than 2 years later he’s the least popular President in history and there’s no media reckoning

Reiterating that Musk's literal voter bribery last time was an unambiguous go-directly-to-jail felony, for which people have been successfully prosecuted over vastly smaller amounts. It wasn't just pouring money into a PAC, whatever one thinks of that. It was a black-letter plain-as-day crime.

Yes, Elon Musk’s Vote-Buying Is Against the Law

People have gone to prison for comparable schemes.

Musk got away with his $1 million vote-buying scheme in 2024. Why wouldn't he try something similar this November?

Paywalls are bad enough in principle. When you paywall an article I WANTED TO READ, you're a thousand times worse. STEAL THAT SHIT! WIDEBAND IT! WHY ARE YOU PUTTING A PROFIT MOTIVE IN MY FACE RIGHT NOW‽ This isn't entertainment. These are basic political, scientific, and sociology articles.

Blocked another user today who posted a paywalled article. Stop doing this. Stop retoasting people that do this. Most importantly, stop writing for orgs that put up paywalls! Paywalls are garbage and journalism orgs that use them need to crash and burn yesterday.

I’m just basing this on what other species do when one of their own goes rogue but I feel like if a guy’s business model involves making everybody stupid & gatekeeping the collectively earned knowledge of humankind in order to charge people for it we kind of have to rip apart & eat that guy.

“We see a future where intelligence is a utility, like electricity or water, and people buy it from us on a meter.” - Sam Altman. I will never stop thinking about how nakedly evil this is, and it has framed every single AI headline I’ve read since.

Good summary of what the insanity that was the Fauci hearing yesterday was about- basically a senators vendetta against Fauci and overall an attack on science versus conspiracy theories. An absolute shocking display from the Republican senators involved.

Anthony Fauci’s high-profile Senate hearing: what we learned

Six years on from Covid crisis, Republicans still politicizing science – and Fauci remains a political punching bag

I believe there is no greater generational constant in USA than the high profile snake oil salesman. I bet historians can document trajectory changes in USA purely based on phenomena & gold rushes engineered by snake oil salesmen. ‘I invented a genie’ guy may be their crowning achievement though.

“What we need to explain to the world: Number one, we are close to creating a genie that can grant any wish. Number two, we are going to make sure that our first wishes broadly benefit humanity” - Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI — This is definitely the opposite of Anthropic’s AI kills all jobs pitch.

I wish I could find the exact quote but it went something like … Black people worship a Jesus who knows what it means to be lynched White people worship a Jesus who will forgive them for lynching a Black person

I worked at Disney a while ago. Do you know why theme parks are so safe? Because OOSHA reps can walk the track on any ride at any time and any safety violation they see is a $10,000 fine. Each. Theme parks are not safe because the company cares. They're safe because it's cheaper to comply.

Turns out that food companies were only checking their food because the government told them to, which is exactly why we need government regulations.

Under a Binface government, anyone who doesn’t accept human-made climate change as fact will be sent back to school, from Year 1 right the way to A Levels, to see if anything goes in the second time round. #VoteBinface

I cannot repeat it enough: If we make it through this, schoolchildren must be taught How Fascism Works, not merely that "1933-1945 Nazis Were Bad". The past ten years has been a long decade of people unable or unwilling to name the ideology with the swastikas filed off.

We still have the cultural image that actual Nazis were defeated in the 1940's, and the remaining Nazis are either unemployed basement-dwellers or fringe militias in Idaho. There is still a reluctance by media and business leaders to say openly that the world's wealthiest person is a Nazi.

150,000 marched yesterday in London for trans rights. Opened the Sky News app. Scrolled and scrolled. Nothing. BBC News app. Nothing. Guardian app. Nothing. This is what actual silencing looks like.
