Really important to note that in no way shape or form did Anthropic’s models in this incident “escape containment,” and not just in the word-policing sort of way. The model stumbled through an open, misconfigured gap. From Anthropic’s incident report:

Thing is, there are laws against most of that he’s doing. And we should be looking at prosecuting him with a separate sentence for each offence. To name a few Stalking the couple Harassment of multiple women Intimidation using racist terminology Sexualisation of children. Arrest, jail, prosecute.

Like I am definitely not the customer they’re pitching to being somewhat unimpressed with AI in general and viewing it as a huge security problem but, even among AI aficionados, Copilot is poorly regarded. I’m pretty sure no one wants this

I am normally the first to defend civil servants. However, if this reporting is true then there should be mass firings and if at all legally feasible, criminal charges. To butcher a West Wing quote: everyone who did it, everyone who ordered it, and everyone who knew about it.

My father was a navigator in the RAF in the 60s and 70s (maybe a bit of the 50s?) and absolutely loved doing all the maths around celestial navigation. When i was a kid in the 90s he’d talk about it a lot and is probably why i ended up in astronomy for a bit (he even bought me a little telescope)

Airplanes have? had? a tiny periscope port thingy in their "roof" to allow celestial nav. When all else fails, the stars are still in their heavens. Right now, wherever you are, can you point to north, south, east, & west?

This already happens WAY more often than people know. We've had to reinvent bronze casting more times than I recall. Your sheets growing up actually were softer and better and no we can't fix it. Nobody knows how to make the good flexy fountain pen nibs anymore.
