Glaswegian in Edinburgh. Numbers, music, bikes, books

👀 Shame nobody involved in this correspondence has done more than skim-read the Cycling Scotland article and then conflate the numbers and times being reported. There’s no ‘gotchas’ with automated counters; just read slower https://cycling.scot/news/scotland-s-bike-lane-networks-break-new-records

COUNTER ARGUMENT.—Chair of bsky.app/profile/edin... unconvinced by claims for Leith Walk bike numbers. Reader's letter: www.broughtonspurtle.org.uk/letters/coun... #Edinburgh #hyperlocal #news #cycling #statistics

Cyclists on Picardy Place.

Was in a shop on Princes Street this morning and saw a couple just loading gear into a big hold-all and then walking out. The only staff member on the floor was serving at the till. Wearily said “thanks” when I told her and put a call out for security - must happen all the time.

the common belief that so-called "back office" roles in the public sector are unnecessary is predicated on an understanding of the world of work that's no deeper than "when mummy hides her face she isn't actually there anymore"

Essential, brilliant reporting by @by-cjewett.bsky.social It's TERRIFYING: MAHA folks are INVESTIGATING pediatricians, who are some of the lowest paid docs in the professions, for vaccinating kids It's part of a 20-year anti-vaxx campaign by RFK Jr "that some of his political allies have joined"

NEW: Ken Paxton's office is investigating pediatricians for vaccinating children. He alleged a sprawling profit-driven conspiracy. Pediatricians say the accusations are an attempt at intimidation. 🎁 www.nytimes.com/2026/10/05/h...

It's a huge democratic deficit, really a catastrophe. We know from polls, studies (even the Tory one that was meant to find against LTNs), an election results that safe streets are *extremely* popular, but the minority opposition to them is more aggressive, older, and richer than the support.

There's bottomless anger on Facebook in Glasgow. Politicians have to stop being dribbled like basketballs by small by small angry groups of pensioners while large numbers of parents who don't have the time to post on Facebook 10x a day are forced to inch along pavements clutching their toddlers.

Somehow, the city produced almost the only area in Scotland with a 30% fall in traffic, huge support from schools and senior medics amongst others, really minimal impact on adjacent roads per the council’s own figures, and now has overturning SUVs on the bike bus route.

A small number of angry drivers / pandering politicians had enough incentive to get the council to remove a years-old quiet neighbourhood scheme. The same concentration of power doesn’t exist in the diffuse body of local people who would like not to have overturning SUVs in their street

What happens when you create a high-traffic neighbourhood by removing the modal filters on the Braid Estate… SUVs end up on their side Junction of Braid Rd and Hermitage Dr. Around school pick up time, Thursday 1st Oct

A black SUV on its side with the underside visible. A police car in the foreground and an ambulance in the background. A police officer stands in hi viz beside the SUV. The pole of a zebra crossing can be seen in the foreground

Very funny how Wes Streeting’s statement that the local farmer only had a “partial picture” read like “the intelligence services were all over this plot already” and could now be anything from that to “oh wow you’ll never guess what they found in the vans and I really wish I could tell you”.

Someone’s just shared pretendy working-class hero Bonny Prince Bob‘s latest Instagram contribution on Edinburgh trams. The lack of any factual basis in any of the populist claims is astounding.

An insight into cycling trends - the introduction of Voi bikes has added about 500 additional cyclists per day to Leith Walk; the tram closure added another 250 at the peak. The Voi effect is much larger at the weekend, while the inverse is true for the tram.

A snap going the other way (into town) this morning. I was about midway in the queue, with about as many people behind me. This was around 8.45am, so some time after the *actual* peak, which seems to be around 8.15am.

My view from the middle of a queue of cycle traffic, waiting to cross at traffic lights on the South City Way cycle route in the south of Glasgow, around 8.45am this morning. The city centre is up ahead.

There's something amazing about being in a peloton of 40+ bikes on the cycle lane heading home. Every driver at the front of a queue of side-street traffic... every person peering out of a bus window... every passer-by gets the message: "Oh wow, yeah, people are using this stuff". Never gets old.

My view travelling home by bike: Loads of people cycling on the South City Way cycle lane on Victoria Road in Govanhill in the Southside of Glasgow, during evening rush hour. A woman in front of me wears an incredibly fetching gold coloured helmet.
