My post about that AI essay in the HWA newsletter I'm so sad that we're all spending part of our day dealing with this. Think of all the creative energy this community lost today because of this garbage. Take-home message: AI sucks. Keep fighting the good fight against it. ❤️

Emily Wilson set the entire world to arguing how to properly interpret an ancient poem and a modern blockbuster but sure, this is a failure of public engagement.
If the academy gets pulled into coming out swinging against the biggest adaptation of Homer in probably a couple generations off the back of one prominent scholar deciding to be Reviewer 2 to Nolan's work, it will say, IMO, pretty damning things about academia's ability to foster public engagement.
I can’t believe we’re still having a debate about whether there’s a trade off between job creation and measures to green the economy. There isn’t. The evidence was clear years ago - a green economy creates far more jobs than the fossil fuel economy it replaces. Come on Labour, catch up …

Fortunately there's been a lot of attention in the press recently on the importance of thorough academic peer review and examination standards, so I'm sure the same newspapers doing that reporting will be calling for more funding for it 🙃
As thousands of research academics are made redundant the whole system of free/cheap peer review will collapse.

Ex-PM Starmer said, in response to Raise the Colours terrorising people, ‘I am supporter of flags’, ‘I’m very encouraging of flags. I think they’re patriotic and I think they’re a great symbol of our nation’ and his family had ‘got St George’s flag in our flat’ www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home...
The campaign of harassment and intimidation Raise the Colours have undertaken against council staff, contractors, and members of the public as reported by the Clarion today is shocking if not surprising. Excellent reporting. oxfordclarion.uk/the-clarion-...

Definitely the case here. In two weeks we find which 9 of 12 in my group will be gone. The other 3 will then have a month to prepare and find hourly-paid replacements for all the classes across two degrees. And supervise 25 PhDs. Plus admin and pastoral care and research. Management doesn’t care.
If you're arriving at uni this autumn, or maybe dropping your kids, remember that there could be a ghostly phalanx of absent redundant staff, lost modules and degraded degrees making it a very unhappy place. It may *look* the same, but it won't *be* the same. www.ft.com/content/e5b0...

Fantastic night at Chapter watching The Lost Boys (Thoughts and Prayers to the person who really didn't like Kiefer Sutherland's vampire toes)
Yup. I noted a while back that I don't and won't use "AI" for my writing work, and I recently update my personal site to note that fact. And yes, it's annoying we feel obliged to do this now.
New blog entry: On the non-use of AI in my writing process: www.antipope.org/charlie/blog...
About a year ago Hank Green did a couple of videos with sections about how AI was the future and we had to get on board or be left behind, he worded it in such a way that he made himself look like he thought both AI boosters and detractors were both wrong and he was the reasonable middle.

Thoughts on the dead singer. Yesterday, my middle aged straight hairy biker son went on one on social media about the dead singer and those eulogising him. He did not hold back. What was unusual was that he took to social media to vent knowing it would attract vile bile. I asked him why.

This kind of shit is reminiscent of Boomers sneering about Millennials/Xers yearning for "participation trophies." And who conceived of/rewarded the kid Xers/Millennials with those trophies in the first place, cocksucker? And now you have to gall to criticize/mock them over a thing YOU did?
No fuck off we're not calling this "Millennial grey" this shit was dictated completely by boomer retiree house flippers we absolutely had NO say in this
Cool use of ChatGPT means invading your kids privacy through AI because you’re afraid to talk with them. The privacy impact of AI needs talking about much, much more. Lots of other fears are discussed, but privacy is (as so often) forgotten.

Instant favorite AA -- I used @friede.bsky.social's work in the games I designed for my MLIS capstone!! The insights on viewing actual play, and TTRPGs in general, as learning experiences are so important. There's so many valuable things you can take into the "real world" from them. She nailed it.
