literally these are books that would be pulped if not bought for 10 cents on the dollar. do rare books sometimes make it into there? yeah, if someone is careless, but that's *upstream* of what happens on sale, not *downstream*. you fundamentally are rescuing something from the fucking pulper.

there's no need to get outraged by every single thing. book destruction is not some kind of sin. it's not like they're trashing rare editions. lots of books get pulped all the time. now you're just looking for ways to be mad.

I'm just gonna say: it somewhat baffles me that people who are understandably skeptical of opaque LLMs as legitimate sources of information will suddenly go full on "the computer KNOWS" when they are using opaque tools to "detect" AI. The computer does not know.

To write in the classic high fantasy mould, you need not be hung up on food specifically, but there must be SOME very mundane thing you're sincerely interested in and prepared to describe in excruciating detail every time it comes up. Clothing. Furniture. Architecture. It doesn't work without it.

@danmcquillan.bsky.social's book is an excellent sociological and feminist analysis of the fascist necropolitics that come about when beurocracies adopt AI technologies to increase efficiency. It was written before the LLM wave hit in 2023, yet is somehow even more relevant now.

This is what is driving me nuts. So many posters around here keep haw-hawing about R’s in strawberry and clearly have NO idea that these are extremely powerful machines *already* that we have not yet figured out how to utilize fully. If we stopped development today, they’d still be astonishing

No one would ever, ever, demand that a man be grateful and quiet after selling any number of books because of an unsolicited shout-out, and Wilson is right in this interview with the brilliant @katekilla.bsky.social to not even engage that argument.

Question One of the things people are saying on social media about your review is that you ought to be grateful that Nolan mentioned your translation, that it probably helped your book sales. Answer: Oh my gosh. I mean, that was very predictable that people would say that, right? I mean that is sadly not a surprising reaction. I don't know that I have to say very much about it because ... yeah, there it is again.

The precedent is that if you commercialize AI products, you could end up paying financial settlements to aggrieved copyright holders. So if you're advancing a manuscript that is a black box of potential liabilities, that adjusts your risk calculus significantly.
