As you can see, fires in the Pacific NW are getting much larger in recent decades. The largest fires (100K acres+) have increased by 10-15X since the 1980s. 1/

I'm not sure folks have realized just how crazy the second half of 2026 and 2027 will be for global temperatures – on the back of a record-smashing El Niño event. Here is my latest estimate of where both years will end up compared to global temperatures since 1850.

Expect some smoke in northern Napa and Sonoma counties this evening. If the fire continues to burn, smoke may be dispersed elsewhere in the Bay Area. #CAwx

Remarkable amount of fire on the ground, and smoke in the air, this evening. In this satellite snapshot, numerous large fires (red thermal detections) and smoke plumes stretch from Great Basin northward into British Columbia; fire weather conditions will worsen this weekend.

If the latest FIRIS perimeter for #WoodsideFire is accurate, this would be one of the stranger fire footprints & trajectories I've seen. Under strong NWly winds parallel to coastline, it appears fire has spotted *over oceanic coves* & into downwind forest...twice!! Whoa.
Definitely accurate. Was listening to scanner at the time when the second fire broke out at Ocean Cove Campground. Very windy day along the North Coast! Here are the two incidents per Sonoma County log, via pulse point.

Denying FMAGs (FEMA fire management grants) is a big deal. Especially for the kind of fire outbreak that OR has gone through the past few weeks. A troubling development and hopefully not a trend as we hit the heart of fire season.
