I have a saying: "Maturity is more about knowing _when_ to be grown up than _how_ to be grown up. The when/how thing is important and applies to other areas of life and work too.

I keep seeing videos of a guy who catches crabs and lobsters, cracks all the barnacles off them, puts a shrimp in their claws and throws them back. can you imagine. abducted by aliens but they just give you a spa day and hand you two hot dogs and let you go

It's another variant of tone policing. Stay calm, and sly, and imply your intense dislike of another group, and you'll be fine. Become angry because you, your group or one you empathise with is being targeted by manipulative weasels in suits, and YOU are the problem.

It's probably one of the things I'm most excited about, and one of the things that is most impactful for changing the culture and toxicity on the site. Not easy with a small team with limited resources, but we'll do our best to make that a reality.

Are AI companies being extremely irresponsible with incomplete and badly defined parameters for their LLMs? Yes! Are they unwittingly creating Skynet? No. Grow up. Come on

And if (when?) machine life does arise, it is going to do so in a form and format that we may not even recognize as akin to us. The great sin of anthropomorphism is that we must presume all sentient or sapient life must follow the same mold as we did, as if there is only ever one evolutionary path.

My favourite fact about Iceland is that we have many, many crime writers but only one forensic pathologist, and he was so busy answering all of their questions that he decided to have a small seminar for writers to get some peace. It immediately sold out so he had another one that also sold out.

"Your brains stop developing at age 25" was a press misrepresentation of a study. They wanted to see if brains continued to develop after adolescence, so the study was capped at age 25. A later study with a wider subject pool showed that brains are ALWAYS developing our whole lives.

this is why it's my pet peeve fake science fact. It's absolute bs! nothing happens to brains at age 25, they do not "fully mature". you will notice that many societies have an age of majority or coming-of-age or whatever and none of them have ever chosen mid-20s.
