He/him. Reader and part time cat furniture. Trying to recall how this social media stuff is supposed to work.
Not new, and not discovered...still great news. I offer a, perhaps, more accurate, less colonizing, title: "Western scientists describe a felid known to local communities as Tilcayo. It is the first description of its kind in over a century"
🧪 New cat species identified in Bolivia, first in over a century - Called Tilcayo by local communities, it is part of a group called tiger cats found across much of South America www.reuters.com/business/env...
I have a saying: "Maturity is more about knowing _when_ to be grown up than _how_ to be grown up. The when/how thing is important and applies to other areas of life and work too.
I reckon this chap is an agent provocateur for the Shrimp Cause. Somewhere below the surface are a bunch of shrimp demagogues inciting rebellion.
I keep seeing videos of a guy who catches crabs and lobsters, cracks all the barnacles off them, puts a shrimp in their claws and throws them back. can you imagine. abducted by aliens but they just give you a spa day and hand you two hot dogs and let you go
It's another variant of tone policing. Stay calm, and sly, and imply your intense dislike of another group, and you'll be fine. Become angry because you, your group or one you empathise with is being targeted by manipulative weasels in suits, and YOU are the problem.
I think this thread has cleared up a lot for me in terms of how the bsky mods think "toxicity" is about being or appearing mean. You can say the most vile shit imaginable, but so long as it's said calmly, you're not going to get banned, and that "howdy neighbour!" attitude is all they want here

It's probably one of the things I'm most excited about, and one of the things that is most impactful for changing the culture and toxicity on the site. Not easy with a small team with limited resources, but we'll do our best to make that a reality.
It seems like this is a good time to tell you all why LLMs are never, and can never be, conscious.
Are AI companies being extremely irresponsible with incomplete and badly defined parameters for their LLMs? Yes! Are they unwittingly creating Skynet? No. Grow up. Come on
And if (when?) machine life does arise, it is going to do so in a form and format that we may not even recognize as akin to us. The great sin of anthropomorphism is that we must presume all sentient or sapient life must follow the same mold as we did, as if there is only ever one evolutionary path.
This post is making the rounds again for some reason and therefore I feel I must inform you that they’ve hired another one so there are now TWO forensic pathologists working in Iceland.
My favourite fact about Iceland is that we have many, many crime writers but only one forensic pathologist, and he was so busy answering all of their questions that he decided to have a small seminar for writers to get some peace. It immediately sold out so he had another one that also sold out.
"Your brains stop developing at age 25" was a press misrepresentation of a study. They wanted to see if brains continued to develop after adolescence, so the study was capped at age 25. A later study with a wider subject pool showed that brains are ALWAYS developing our whole lives.
this is why it's my pet peeve fake science fact. It's absolute bs! nothing happens to brains at age 25, they do not "fully mature". you will notice that many societies have an age of majority or coming-of-age or whatever and none of them have ever chosen mid-20s.
My brother is in a touring hardcore band and just arrived at his venue for today
FOREVER AND ALWAYS MY DIRECTOR 🥳🥳🥳🥳 (Not my video.)
Personally I would not pick this fight with the youtube guy who demonstrates all the ways he can nail you with an arrow at 200 yards using his feet while wearing 12-inch Pleasers, whose wife can also kill you with her bare hands, and has 9 billionteen followers who are all trans women with swords.
Blumineck lo ha vuelto a hacer 🥹 le aplaudo hasta que se me caigan las manos, bravo. "Be masculine, be feminine, be neither, or be both. But be kind."
Yeah, I mean "my wife's hot, gender isn't real, we don't give a shit if you think we're trans or not, go fuck yourselves" while whirling a claymore round your head in nipple stickers is about as good a response as anyone has ever given.
@garius.bsky.social a fascinating thread for you on a modern purity of naval architecture.
1/x The widest ships in the world are not tankers or aircraft carriers. They are four Norwegian survey vessels, 104 metres long and 70 metres across the stern, shaped like slices of pie. They exist for one purpose: to listen to rocks. This is the Ramform Titan class. #shipbuilding
This is a WONDERFUL story. It brought tears to my eyes. 🥹

"You want my position on trans people competing in women's sports? Which ones? Name them, specificially. If it's such a sweeping societal problem, you must have a list of trans athletes. Who exactly are we talking about, and what sports do they play?" Reject the framing. It's that easy.
Overheard: "I need to think of an excuse to get out of the party tonight" "Simple, food poisoning!" "You don't get food poisoning in the middle of the day, you get it at like 4am"
If you see this, could you please reskeet it? I want to test something.
“Not long ago, Just Stop Oil activists were given long sentences for simply discussing blocking infrastructure. In contrast, the balaclava-wearing gangs now do much the same with apparent impunity. One could almost call it two-tier justice.”

This is like asking a frog whether the local ponds and waterways had a positive or negative impact on its life... It's a great starting point for some alternative history speculative fiction, but wow, is it impossible to answer IRL...
