Ha ha. AA Ireland sending me an insurance quote that's 270 more expensive than last year's, with a cheery, "Good news, we saved you on how bad it could have been!" Every year, whatever insurer I have tries this on. Every year, I easily find cheaper when I shop around. 1/2

Unsolicited writing advice, no. 47: Here's an experiment to try: Take a paragraph of your WIP. Highlight the most important word in each sentence. Now try rewriting with the important words at the very end of the sentences. Look at the difference it makes each way, and the way it affects emphasis.

This👇. How much more proof does the world need to know that Israel is a terrorist state, with no moral boundaries, and Netanyahu is the man leading a genocide that started with the Palestinians, moved on to the Lebanese and now is destroying the planet itself.

💥 Israel is burning the forests of Wadi al-Slouqi and Houla in South Lebanon. Not military targets. Forests, valleys, hills and entire ecosystems. Environmental crime & deliberate erasure of a piece of Lebanon’s natural heritage. 8/4 @sarahabdallah.bsky.social

Another Israeli airstrike in Gaza. More people murdered. Since the ‘ceasefire’ over 1,230 Palestinians have been murdered in Gaza, and over 4,000 injured. There is no ‘ceasefire’ Stop selling UK arms to Israel.

We’ve just rented a projector so the kids can watch some films over August and we’re trying to source and buy treats and snacks. Ionad Hind Rajab is about more than education. It’s about getting back a little bit of childhood. 👇

An Irish artist has helped establish a children's centre in Gaza that provides food, education and psychosocial support to children displaced by the war. Adam Doyle, better known as Spicebag, tells us why he helped create Ionad Hind Rajab. jrnl.ie/7117887

🧵 Three things new @laworldcon.bsky.social attendees & 1st-time Hugo Awards voters sometimes don’t know: 1) You don’t have to vote on every category for your votes to count. EX: Just because you don’t have time to read every Hugo-nominated book doesn’t mean you can’t vote on films & visual arts.

Crime novelist Derek Raymond, whose memoir The Hidden Files I'm re-reading for the Patreon, came from the upper crust & was sent to Eton (he escaped at 16). His summation of the British upper class from which he came is memorable.

I thought that the way my forebears had evolved was truly abhorrent… my family reflected, in microcosm, the nauseating national tendency of the time, which can be summed up as: We have a nasty feeling that what we are doing is disgusting, so we'd better have a society in which disgusting is the right thing to be.'

Someone gave me a "summary" that some AI had produced of a panel I was on, including pull quotes. The quotes were all invented -- no one on the panel said that stuff -- even though the AI was given an audio recording of the whole thing. I told them to trash it and did the transcription myself.

Surely the solution here is just *don't use AI tools* for your writing and research and continue to do your writing and research in ALL the ways you were doing it before you started using AI instead of doing the work??

We should be livid. The article says students are asked to do everything with originals via post (no email when there's no functioning post service?!) and failed for "insufficient evidence of strong obligations to return to your home country". What would that case look like in Gaza right now?!

Sources within the universities say the refusal rate this year is in marked contrast to last year, when more than 80 Gazan students left Gaza in an evacuation organised by the Irish Government.

Last night on Primetime, I discussed water quality in Ireland, and how ultimately, there is no central political responsibility for it.

Green Party / Comhaontas Glas@greenparty.ie · 6d ago

Last night @rodericogorman.bsky.social was on Primetime about the deterioration in our water quality. We need access to clean water, not just for our health, but also because water is such a huge part of our economy, our biodiversity and increasingly our wellness and leisure. #speirgorm

I’ve been standing stock still in this wood for about 10 minutes while I mess about with a photo on my phone. I look up, notice the shape, and slowly crouch down to film This has made me so happy I feel I could cry. It’s as close to magic as I hope to get.

Bordeaux, France, has now recorded more days above 40°C in 2026 alone than during the entire 105-year period from 1920 (when observations began) to 2025. This is deeply shocking.
