In 2018, the IEA’s main scenario reckoned gas generation in Asia would grow by a third by 2025, and still be almost twice as big as solar in 2040. In fact, it has barely grown at all since 2018, and solar overtook last year.

I read a very compelling argument that when this weasel chewed through a cable and unexpectedly shut down the Large Hadron Collider’s 17-mile particle accelerator in April 2016, that’s when our reality went haywire. I have yet to hear a more persuasive explanation. Not even really joking.

I really think people don’t appreciate how much gas-fired generation is at risk from pure economics in the next few years. Probably a third to a half of the world’s LNG trade is feeding power stations which are already, or on the brink of, being permanently undercut by solar+batteries.
David Fickling@davidfickling.bsky.social · 3mo agoImportant also to translate this into costs of gas power in LNG-dependent markets. At $10/mmbtu, pretty much the minimum that LNG can be had for in the best times, a high-utilization plant will need $100/MWh electricity to cover its costs. That’s about 25% above solar with a 4hr battery nowadays.
The Nova Scotia govt under Premier Tim Houston, and its creation, the Independent [sic] Energy Systems Operator (IESO), seem to have drunk enormous amounts of fossil fuel industry Kool-aid.
