I think we're learning: -consumerism is an overpowering populist force in American society -the populism expresses itself as a base urge for greater consumption; it is not reactive to conditions on the ground -people are ashamed of this and often try to disguise it as other types of politics
As @kevinmkruse.bsky.social noted, this was the cover of the pro-free-market, not-progressive Economist one month before the election that brought Trump back to power. The economy had problems, hence the result, but a “total catastrophe” it was not.

The Hill@thehill.com · 2h agoConstruction on a new helipad went through a restart as crews demolished a granite seal that would be the landing spot for Marine One, as work on new changes to the helipad requested by President Trump rolls along.
"Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband, recently appointed to the role by the new Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, meets Secretary of State Rubio in Washington" is one of those lines that would sound perfectly plausible to anyone in 2015, but explaining the intervening period would give them an aneurysm.

Progress finally, my god I haven't been able to draw at all these past couple of days.
The thing I keep running into is that no one really has a specific definition of any group. Like, I see people call themselves liberals and hate on leftists but their positions are all aligned with other people who call themselves leftists and hate on liberals. It gets *wildly* confusing.

Oh wow: ESA announces it has a positive detection of the SpaceX Falcon 9 upper stage booster impacting the moon! I still haven't seen any images of a flash, but that's not surprising. It was faint. Here, they saw evidence of gas (vaporized material) in the impact plume by taking spectra.

As part of a coordinated observing campaign, our Very Large Telescope detected spectral lines of sodium and lithium gas in the impact plume lasting for 5-10 minutes after impact. 🔭 🧪 📷 ESO/C.
