I feel bad for the motorists who had to wait while we rode along Danforth for Critical Mass tonight, but they could have just taken side streets.
I think one of the things people who write this drivel can't understand is that if you're a Jew in America WITHOUT a parasocial attachment to Israel, it's not just that this isn't a hard choice it's that it's offensive to pretend otherwise. I am a Jewish dad with a Jewish kid living in America.

This awful story is another reminder that helmets and high-viz will never be enough to fill the massive safety gaps left by insufficient infrastructure. A traffic calming device before the crosswalk likely would have prevented this death by forcing Knapp to stop, or at the very least, slow down.

If you want to know why people get touchy around the helmet discourse, this is it. Elected officials who do not know the difference between different classes of legal e-bikes and who also can't distinguish them from illegal e-motos probably shouldn't also be writing bicycle helmet laws.

Zohran wasn't wrong for putting out that video, but this is genuinely a tricky needle to thread! This kind of person, unfortunately, has power in local politics, and it's important to constrain them as much as possible.

Ffs. This wasn't comprehensive transportation policy. It was a gift for every NYC parent who doesn't want to argue with their kid about safety gear. He was modeling behavior. "But, Mom, the mayor doesn't wear a helmet!" Yes, he does, and there will be actual, countable lives saved because of it!

The fixation on helmets often obscures the larger conversation about safe infrastructure, and the way I like to explain to people is this: The helmet protects you from yourself, but it won't protect you from anything larger than yourself. If you break it down that way, folks seem to understand.
