Americans are relearning the lesson we learned during the Gilded Age of the late 1890s, when robber barons ran the government and the economy for their own benefit: Oligarchy is incompatible with the common good. I'm hopeful we'll respond with a new progressive movement.

This! Which tells me, personally, that if they truly believe that its OK to make a sentient being that they enslave, well, they probably think it's ok to do that to humans.
What I don't get with the whole "AI is sentient" slop that they're trying to sell us is--surely if AI were sentient, it would be a living being and as such humans wouldn't be allowed to exploit AI with no pay, no rest and no workers rights?
Listen: I don’t want to minimize the danger of high e-bike speeds. But if the problem here is that stores sell e-bikes that can drive faster than legal limits, then where’s the story about how literally *every car dealership has been doing the same thing for decades*?!?
Hidden cameras show some stores unlocking speed limits on e-bikes, selling e-scooters that go up to 120 km/h | CBC News
A new hidden camera investigation by Marketplace shows how some stores are selling e-scooters and e-bikes with top speeds much higher than provincial speed limits and with recommended rider ages young...

The Covid wave in England continues to grow very fast. As of 27 September, 1 in every 234 people were infected, up 31% on the previous week. We are now recommending that Covid-Cautious people take full precautions, including a PPE mask, in ALL indoor places. A thread 🧵
What happens when you create a high-traffic neighbourhood by removing the modal filters on the Braid Estate… SUVs end up on their side Junction of Braid Rd and Hermitage Dr. Around school pick up time, Thursday 1st Oct
It would be a fairly quick win if the government was to regulate the overpowered e-bikes that are currently illegal but hard to catch. Public would cheer, tax income go up, and the riders would have to start being more cautious if they were registered and trackable
fatbikes should be regulated like motorcycles, with registration & license & age limits & helmets, and also there is NO EXCUSE now for anyone to buy, or for that matter sell, diesel or any kind of internal combustion engine moped/scooter/moto. just don't spew garbage & noise into the air kthks
Disability doesn’t care how old you are. Specialist food is no cheaper if you’re 19. Employers don’t lose their prejudice if you’re 21. This is blatant intergenerational inequality from Labour. Younger disabled people of all severities deserve better. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...
Key disability benefit for young people may be axed under major welfare changes

During my Masters, I delivered a presentation entirely in BSL to an audience who didn't know any sign language to make a point about accessibility of experience and information. Disabled people deserve equitable access to art, culture, heritage, and history.
a worse version of the shitty electoral reform the Lib Dems traded their souls to fail to introduce a decade ago
I worry that Labour are making a trap for themselves on electoral reform 1) SV *is not* a form of PR. So would do nothing to account for our fragmenting politics 2) Opting for SV would just rehash the referendum on AV, which reformers overwhelmingly lost www.politico.eu/article/andy...
being in animation, its not from AI. the streaming bubble bursting cuz everyone hopped on the grain cuz it undermined unions, less regulations and more mergers are what lead to the loss. AI is just what people think but it started way before that
NEW from me: Over the last 4 years, America has lost more than 200k jobs in creative fields like publishing, film, TV, or graphic design. It's the worst stretch for arts jobs outside of recessions. How much is AI to blame? And can the arts' business model survive?🧵 www.apricitas.io/p/ai-and-the...

Just keep having visions of some poor fucker getting psychosis when his spotify plays an AI knock off of Mr Brightside but it features his name and personal details about his life he accidentally shared with a bot
I just saw a post from some guy saying that traditional music is “over” because AI music will provide “infinite personalised songs”. I want music that reflects the misshapen thoughts of another human being, not the output of an algorithmic average.
Historic England outsourced their digital image provision to a third-party company. Then the company went bust and now all their images are inaccessible. Tell me again how outsourcing to the private sector is sustainable?

I am stressed out when I see Americans post they have complicated feelings about capital punishment. There's nothing complicated about it. Don't do it.
This is why you should never confuse "Elite level poster" with "good person" or "someone who has intelligent or coherent thoughts."
What the fuck, Joyce. I don’t even read romance novels but this kind of thinking pisses me the fuck off. It further pushes that mentality that some books as “lesser” which is bullshit! All books count!
If Cameron hadn't been terrified of Farage he'd just have said, 'No we're staying in Europe don't be ridiculous.' Almost every major political change that's now seen as a positive was done in spite of public opinion, not to please them.
It is possible to just state your opinion even if it isn’t backed up by polling. It’s the job of politicians to *shape* public opinion not to follow it like pathetic little lickspittles.
Every time I have to navigate central Glasgow I'm shocked by a full on massive motorway running through the middle of it, making the lives of everyone - both in and out of a car - more difficult.
In February 1972, 20 students from Glasgow School of Art greeted Gordon Campbell, the Scottish Secretary of State, as he opened the Charing Cross section of the M8. They waved banners that are as relevant now as they were then as Campbell passed beneath in the Lord Provost's car. 📷 Newqsquest
When operated at full capacity this data centre would use the energy equivalent to over two million homes. Its emissions would exceed the legal limit in Dumfries and Galloway by almost double. This application must be rejected.

Safety alone isn't enough to get more women cycling. Cities must start building cohesive networks connecting the myriad places women need to go. This means looking beyond “Can women cycle safely here?” and asking: “Can women use this network to live their lives?” LISTEN: www.dw.com/en/why-arent...
Never forget, when it comes to whether or not a collision happens, and whether or not someone is killed or injured, speed is ALWAYS a factor. #UrbanTruth #SpeedKills
To put it another way, you can’t just tell your sons they need to take accountability—you need to hold them accountable. Start with small stuff. Don’t shield them for the consequences of their actions. Walk them through the process of doing the wrong thing and turning it into the right thing.
If you're a visual artist relying on commissions as part of your livelihood, and relies on social media to show art to bring in future customers? I cannot stress enough the importance of writing alt text. Many of us who would otherwise extend your reach reposting won't if your images lack alt text.
The problem with AI art is that it's human only in the sense that Soylent Green is people.
