It's Banned Books Week, so I'm sharing the most beautiful thing ever written in one of the most banned books of all time in the United States. THE GREAT GATSBY is my favorite novel.

#HorrorWritersChat This is a very late, and very sick, Dustin Pinney saying hello! I write horror about pop culture and identity. My favorite music to listen to while writing is John Carpenter. My favorite music in life depends on the mood of the day.

#HorrorWritersChat All of my writings (horror and non) include Easter eggs to the Beatles, an early influence of mine. Someone who read my current WIP told me that after the scene I included, they can't look at the cover of ABBEY ROAD the same way again...
#HorrorWritersChat Question Two: “Big black shape with eyes of fire Telling people their desire…” Does music play a part in your horror writing, and if so, how do you use it in the story?

#HorrorWritersChat I worked on a peach farm as a kid. Peach fuzz is irritating, so I had nightmares of being covered in it and scratching my skin off down to the muscle, only for more to fall. Sometimes, giant peaches attacked, but that was less scary. Millions of peaches, peaches for me...

Going with misheard lyrics, but: The first time I heard Ozzy's "Mr Crowley," my child self thought the line was "What have they done with your head?" Imagine a Satanic-Panic '80s flick where metal heads summon the disembodied head of Aleister Crowley. #HorrorWritersChat
#HorrorWritersChat Question Four: “Lay down all thoughts Surrender to the void It is shining…” Conversely, what would the plot be for a horror story from you based on a particular piece of music?
#HorrorWritersChat I have already done this with DREADFUL DISSONANCE. Blasphemous musical instruments pitch so high most people can't hear the music but they feel it in their solar plexus. The instruments feel warm to the touch and you have to put that flute in your mouth! Ew!

Shakey Graves tells a story about how he wrote some of his first album on a haunted 1930s acoustic guitar, and that really writes itself. Are you possessed by the spirit of the music? Has your song been sung before? Is your inspiration divine... Or something darker? #HorrorWritersChat

Tom Delonge finally uncovers indisputable evidence that aliens have been visiting our planet for centuries. Unfortunately for him, in order to stop the bloody invasion he accidentally kickstarted, he has to beat the newcomers in a Battle of the Bands. #HorrorWritersChat

It absolutely does. Mostly it's to get me in the mood of the scene I'm writing, e.g. I had Behemoth's version of A Forest on a loop for The Woodcutter, Wardruna's Kvervandi for a sacrifice scene in Reborn, etc. It totally makes you feel the emotion of the moment. #HorrorWritersChat
#HorrorWritersChat Question Two: “Big black shape with eyes of fire Telling people their desire…” Does music play a part in your horror writing, and if so, how do you use it in the story?
Robert Johnson in an adaptation of Faust. #HorrorWritersChat

#HorrorWritersChat A3: Ooh this one is fun!! If I go w/complementary music & story tone, I'd put Amira Elfeky in @nicholaskaufmann.bsky.social 's Chasing the Dragon (I'm thinking the song "Forever Overdose" here). If I go w/quirky? I'd put Ariana Grande in The Haunting of Hill House.

#HorrorWritersChat Finnish musician Ville Valo is secretly a vampire. He’s working on set creating the music for a vampire tv series while trying to hide his vampiric nature from the cast and crew.

I did a series called "We Took the Long Way Home" about a spooky road that never ends. I listened to what the characters would be listening to on their drive, the very best of the 80s. Several songs made it into the story. Most notably, Billy Joel's "You May Be Right" #HorrorWritersChat
#HorrorWritersChat Question Two: “Big black shape with eyes of fire Telling people their desire…” Does music play a part in your horror writing, and if so, how do you use it in the story?
My punk rock x folk horror novel starred an old punk musician, but his playlist was indie folk-girls and that built my writing playlist because it helped solidify the mood of the book. But I constantly reference songs and artists, and even wrote a song for that novel. #HorrorWriteresChat

#HorrorWritersChat: Greetings wildcats! A.M. Castro, writer of spec fiction and cosmic horror here. I loved "Longface" in AMCs The Vampire Lestat. Amazing proto glam rock vibes by way of T Rex, which I can see the brat prince including on his Playlist. I could also see Dax Riggs or Lera Lynn.

#HorrorWritersChat Hello once again! I'm Vincent, trans man author of mostly trans man led gothic and Lovecraftian horror. Music? Hmmm. I like mostly electronic stuff, I'd say. Currently very into lofi mixes and a newer indie genre called Utopian Scholastic. But I also love rock!

Shelly, from Maryland. Currently finishing up a serial killer novel set in Baltimore in 1891. I tend to use music functionally when writing. So, for example, I’ll listen to the same music my characters would listen to. Gets me into their headspace. #HorrorWritersChat

Hello hello, #HorrorWritersChat! The name's Mitch; horror writer of the queer, sci-fi, and weird kind. As someone who is plugged into music during my every waking moment, my taste is far too wide for me to choose just one genre. But if I HAVE to choose: anything with a synth in it.

Hi. Nate. Working-class cosmic horror. My musical interests are VERY wide, and I tend to create playlists for each major piece I'm working on. But for editing, I almost exclusively listen to instrumental jazz from mid '50s to early '70s. #HorrorWriteresChat
