This one Hurts. RIP Sir Patrick Stewart. What are some of your favorite Picard Moments?
Slop code to the nth. Why the headlong rush to produce poles and piles of code faster and faster? What's the end state?
this story is extremely wild, major investigation from @josephcox.bsky.social: www.404media.co/manifestos-f...
It's a rare show nowadays that portrays a future that we can aspire to. Sir Stewart and the rest of the ST:TNG crew created a timeless story that will be remembered for generations.
I never thought Kirk would outlive Picard, but here we are. It's a sad day to see that Patrick Stewart has passed. I grew up with his portrayal of the captain of the Enterprise as a role model. I miss the days of a society assuming a better future instead of accepting dystopia as the way things are.
PATRICK STEWART singing & dancing on the bridge of the USS Enterprise-D in 1991 as a birthday surprise for STAR TREK creator GENE RODDENBERRY. (never intended for public release this clip eventually surfaced as a DVD bonus feature)
It's not that well known out here in Western Canada, where natural gas is still so dominant (and relatively cheap!) as a home-heating fuel, but in Atlantic Canada there has been a major, rapid shift toward electric heat pumps in recent years.
Chart of the Week: Heat pumps are taking off in Atlantic Canada
Ottawa wants up to 1.1 million more homes to switch. In New Brunswick, nearly half already have.

Sir Patrick Stewart reading his favorite sonnet. Honestly, I never got into Shakespeare, but I somehow associate it with Sir Patrick Stewart. He will be missed 💔 youtube.com/shorts/3Gbt9...

**** Via Halifax Professional Firefighters Halloween is almost here! Whether you’re heading out trick-or-treating or welcoming little ghosts and goblins to your door, let’s make it a fun and safe night for everyone! A few simple precautions can make all the difference. Stay safe, Halifax!
Patrick Stewart regularly highlighting his close friendship with Ian McKellen in ways that said "fuck you" to homophobes is honestly something we need more cis het men to do.
Patrick Stewart story that I've told before: He did a few performances with The Improvised Shakespeare Company, one in New York (for about 15 minutes of the show) and one full show in Chicago. It was the upstairs at iO in Wrigleyville - maybe 100 seats. Nobody knew he would be there.
"People won't listen to you or take you seriously unless you're an old white man. Well, I'm an old white man, and I'm going to use that to help the people who need it."
For all that I made sure I never missed a single episode of TNG growing up, this is the image that stuck the most with me
People can vote for whoever they want, that's democracy. You didn't care about vote-splitting with the BC Greens when you rejected the all-party recommendation for an electoral reform citizens' assembly. You had your chance to reform the system, so whatever happens on election day is on you.
Supporters of the BC NDP and the Green Party share a lot of the same values. Strong public health care, protecting the place we call home, and asking the wealthiest to chip in more to build a stronger B.C.
Generative AI is outputting so much code, one company has built an alternative to Git because it could not keep up. The world does not need more code. Code bases are already bloated and slow. I've yet to see GenAI remove copious amounts of code from applications.
All these problems (including future climate) are political. They have well known solutions that benefit everyone besides pavers and car dealerships.
St. John's has most of the problems of a big city and very few of the benefits. Lack of housing, lack of mass transit, too many unsafe roads, poor bike infrastructure. Plus a poor climate as a cherry on top.

SEVEN MONTHS. Yet another reason we cannot trust the majority of industry with our personal information.
On Friday, Navigate360 — the third-party U.S.-based company that manages all of Crime Stoppers international tips — confirmed its systems had been breached. It was its first public acknowledgment of the hack, seven months after it happened. www.cbc.ca/news/investi...
There needs to be relief for the average NLer (I won't use depersonalized economic terms like taxpayer) but there is no plan to cover the shortfall, including other revenue cuts. The PCs do love ramping up deficits and blaming the other government when they get in power and the effects kick in.
Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are soon going to be paying less at the pumps as the provincial government announced it is cutting the tax on gasoline and diesel to zero cents a litre. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...
Why is Toronto even having an election? It already has a mayor: Doug Ford.
It’s not the tech we need to fear it’s that blind and greedy corporations will stop at nothing to accrue more wealth and power. Without the sci-fi element it would hardly be news worthy.
How many of our biggest problems (at least in the Anglo world) today can’t be traced back to the Regan/Thatcher/Mulroney-era?
Wow. CBC Ideas: the obesity epidemic can be traced back to the 80s and Regan era where food (and most other) corporations were given the objective to increase the sales of their product in a market already over-supplied with calories.
The food industry story is well documented in a couple of books I've read recently. There was a theory that there would be world famine so the US switched (and incentivized) mono cropping (corn, soy, etc.) and then the famine didn't happen so they needed to use those crops another way.
The cause of the obesity epidemic has been identified. The ultra-processed foods (UPFs) are displacing proper healthy food making us overweight and undernourished.

Today, there is strong evidence to suggest aluminum adjuvants are safe for use in childhood vaccines. Plus, each year, about four million deaths are avoided because of these immunizations. Childhood vaccinations don't threaten children's lives, they save them.
