anyway every man's death diminishes me, for I am involved in mankind, but some diminish me a lot less than most.

I will reiterate: Christians in the West evangelize in public for the same reason men catcall. Neither is trying to persuade you; both are reminding you that the public sphere belongs to them and you exist in it at their sufferance.
Just found out I’ve been doing the Disney version of thinking Saddam Hussein was involved in 9/11
I think you’re mixing them up with Prince Hans of the Southern Isles
It makes more sense when you play with 100 doors. You have a 1% chance of selecting the correct door at random. 99% chance the prize is behind another door. Monty opens 98 doors, all losers. Only two doors left: the one you picked and the one Monty didn't open. It's obvious where the prize is.
Honestly, we make a big red button. We tell the president it’s The Button. We put it on the resolute desk. We make a big deal about it. We don’t say anything about it other than remind him that pushing the button would kill 90 million people. He pushes the button. Nothing happens. He goes to jail.
It's really nice of the English to keep playing "My Country, 'Tis Of Thee" in honor of our 250th birthday
I’ve told this story before but in college (in the middle of my debate bro era), I was in an argument with my gf at the time and she said ‘Noam, the only reason you’re winning this argument is because you’re better than me at arguing’. Found it incredibly annoying at the time, but: Wise! Profound!
it is objectively a little funny that the so-called “rationalists” trying to stick to “empiricism” have based their entire worldview on just making shit up and treating it as real
When I was in 7th grade I heard they were making a movie called Hannibal. Having played lots of Age of Empire but never having seen Silence of the Lambs I assumed it would be about Hannibal Barca and I’m still disappointed it was not
on a sincere level: being a dad rules, kids can be challenging but there simply isn’t anything like raising a little human being and watching them turn into a person in front of you I love my boys very very much and I feel so lucky to have them
DOCTOR: "So what seems to be the problem?" PATIENT: "Mmhbbhhggr hhruuh engghhuu." DOCTOR: "I'm sorry I can't understand, but don't worry. Great singer Bob Dylan is in town. Go see his show and no matter what ails you, you'll feel better!" PATIENT (sadly): "Ehg ddnghh m'm Bddnnn."

I think there is a qualitative factor in how obnoxious the bureaucratic elements of our lives have become. Tons of exploitative business practices and deliberate friction to make getting ripped off the default. I don't think econometrics capture that and I genuinely think it has been getting worse.
Today my five year old who loves numbers scrolled through the calendar to the year 2200 and asked if he would be alive then. I said probably not, but you will have grandchildren. I said it with a smile on my face. But now he’s sleeping, and I’m allowed to be an absolute fucking wreck
Also when I say people need to shitpost more this is what actually I mean
hope is that over the next twenty years we shift the opinion around the ivy league. it’s not the best and brightest. it’s a daycare camp for the richest and most dysfunctional children in america. real scholars go to michigan. they go to ucla and north carolina. they go georgia tech.
“go back to the moon but this time we have really good cameras” was a fantastic idea
This image of home just came down from the Artemis II crew. Taken after their translunar injection burn, there are aurorae at top right and lower left, and zodiacal light at lower right. Credit: NASA/Reid Wiseman
I’m not saying following what your dick wants always delivers ideal results but it is a hell of a lot better than following what you think other people’s dicks want
I’m sensitive to the idea that social media is inherently a catastrophizing machine; I’m also sensitive to the idea that what’s going on is potentially an actual catastrophe.
My dad asked me why I know so much about moths and I responded “probably the same reason you have a whole room of model cars and can tell the make/model/year of any car by its headlights”
Did a man send you an unsolicited picture of his…
