I get a little pulse of relief when events are scheduled while I'm out of town -- I don't have to worry about whether I'll be too anxious to go or whether will I regret or feel guilty about not going. It's all derailed bc there's nothing I can do about it.

Good morning and happy Tuesday to everyone. Seriously, I don't know who needs to hear this, but what they're calling socialism is just using our taxes to pay for something besides bombs.
This would have destroyed me as a kid. Reading was EVERYTHING. And not children’s books. Even at a young age.
Jesus Christ: after a recent ruling by the Eighth Circuit that allowed Act 372 to take effect, an Arkansas county has banned all children from checking out any books in the adult section, bringing home any DVDs, or using the self-checkout kiosk in its public libraries.
I picked up a copy of the collected letters of JRR Tolkien for reasons, and this is the most bullshit table of contents I've ever seen. I'm actively angry that it exists

Seems like a great way to intimidate voters (Or have the whole thing thrown out when challenged for intimidating voters)
Yup. Complete shit show.
“Trade war with the US! They’re going to get their oil from VEN! 😭😭😭” It’s hard to feel bad for the Alberta/Canada oil-based economy when we’ve been railing at them for years to diversify and instead they’ve done their best to kill renewable energy.
I am begging healthcare workers to stop doing this. You should be masking by default. With everything we know about how COVID is transmitted it’s ridiculous we don’t have mandatory masking in healthcare. At the bare minimum, you should mask mirror.
Fuckable Foghorn Leghorn already exists and his name is Benoit Blanc
Imagine being talented and beautiful and rich and famous and still the most noteworthy thing about you is how good a person you are.
This is ML, Machine Learning, which is (as I've mentioned before) categorically different than LLM's. Machine Learning is SUPER COOL and has been for ages. It's going to be HUGE in small molecule treatments, as it already is in breast cancer detection. It has NOTHING in common with ChatGPT.
apropos of nothing, here's a terrific feature about a meaningful, life-saving use of artificial intelligence, which I have been thinking about for over a year. it's just extremely stupid to say that AI has zero benefits even if you don't think it should be used in writing (which I don't)!
“if we don’t stand up for the free speech of racists, it puts everyone’s free speech in danger.” - guy who only ever talks about free speech when it’s racism
Porto has made public transport free for all residents. Since 10 July, anyone living in Portugal’s second largest city can ride the metro, buses, trams and ferries across the metropolitan area at no charge, in a bid to coax people out of their cars. EU Today buff.ly/pDRs778 #ShareGoodNewsToo

Things that count as reading: * Short books * Smut * Graphic novels * Audiobooks * Fanfic * Too many other things to list Things that don't count as reading: * Having ChatGPT fart out a "summary" for you.
I read a shitload of books, almost all of it trash. Of course it counts. I'm about to read the entire run of Animorphs because i missed it as a kid and my timeline absolutely Will Not Stop talking about it so hey sure why not let's get ready for that Coogler series sure and THAT ALSO COUNTS.
Six litres of apple juice from our little tree this year — pretty impressive, given what a wet, chilly summer it’s been. On the other hand, there were barely any apple maggots, which is how we usually lose most of the apples.

I say this with love for the absurdity of comics: this is a comic about using the power of imagination and the color green to battle the rest of the color spectrum
The ending to the first episode of Lanterns has upset some fans, who say that the show "definitely isn’t honoring the comics" and that it's a "garbage universe that disrespects the characters of DC." https://bit.ly/3UodudL

14 hours later and my mentions are still full of angry treatises about badly behaved cyclists. Bike lanes are not a reward for good cyclist behavior! They are infrastructure proven to make cities safer for ALL ROAD USERS. Whatever way cyclists have wronged you is irrelevant to the discussion!
Every conversation about bike lanes is like: "Car crashes kill a huge number of people every day, including pedestrians, cyclists, & car occupants. Good bike infrastructure has been shown to make everyone safer (& doesn't increase congestion)." "But sometimes cyclists break rules & hit people!"
