Still mostly on mastodon, but investigating. My views are my own and have nothing to do with my employers past, present, or future.

One benefit of a simultaneous wildfire smoke and heatwave situation is that the smoke may slightly mitigate high temperatures. And one benefit of living in hell is that you get to write unique sentences like the one before this.

It's nice that The Odyssey is getting its day in the sun as a synecdoche for history. But when this summer is over, it's back to the relentless, remorseless rise of Jane Austen.

Google Ngram Viewer chart comparing the frequency of “Jane Austen” and “The Odyssey” in English-language books from 1800 to 2022. Both phrases are rare before the mid-nineteenth century. Mentions of “Jane Austen” rise sharply after about 1860, fluctuate through the twentieth century, and then climb steeply after 1990 to roughly 0.000075% by 2020. “The Odyssey” increases more gradually, reaching about 0.000020% by 2020.

Hey PDX we're about to have a Smoke Week, and AQI forecasts vary between 170 and 500 (2020 levels, remember that?) Get your air purifiers, seal up your windows, and cancel outdoor activities. You don't want to breathe this stuff in.

It continues to fuck me up that we stay thinking about 9/11 but want to memory hole Covid so bad we're destroying the entire concept of public health in the US.

In the United States, there have been 103,436,829[3] confirmed cases of COVID-19 with 1,238,563[3] confirmed deaths, the most of any country, and the 17th highest per capita worldwide.[43] The COVID-19 pandemic ranks as the deadliest disaster in the country's history.[44] It was the third-leading cause of death in the U.S. in 2020, behind heart disease and cancer.[45] From 2019 to 2020, U.S. life expectancy dropped by three years for Hispanic and Latino Americans, 2.9 years for African Americans, and 1.2 years for White Americans.[46] In 2021, U.S. deaths due to COVID-19 rose,[47] and life expectancy fell.[48]

A dangerous wind shift (visible on radar imagery) has just occurred in #Spokane, WA, where major wildfire disaster is currently unfolding. Three separate major fires (circled) near or within city limits have already caused major structure loss & chaotic, expanding evacs. #WAwx

drunk girl trying to tell her friends that she thinks they are “weekend at Bernie’s” with McConnell, but she has got completely the wrong movie and keeps calling it “doing a Fish Called Wanda” with him and I’m dying

What I hate about COVID downplayers is… you won okay. In the aftermath of humanity coming together to develop the most crucial vaccines of our lifetime & collectively sacrificing to save lives, we are now less safe, less vaccinated & less empathetic than ever. You won ok. Lay down your swords.

It’s so funny when people are like “sure you’re an abolitionist now but wait until you’re the victim of a property crime.” Buddy, the most useful thing the police have ever done for property crime is put the form you need to submit to your insurance online.

As much as radicals get criticized for being "unrealistic," demanding entire demographics facing literal genocide always maintain mild rhetoric and actions is an absolutely delusional level of conformity to expect. I don't think that gets said enough.

You are a mark if you are getting propagandized to build more jails and arrest even more people at a time when all of the governments OWN MEASURES show violent crime having significantly decreased over the past years.

The very people who accuse others of "staying silent" are SILENT THEMSELVES ON 1000 issues a day which is NORMAL because you are ONE PERSON & simply cannot have takes on every single thing.

Context because I know I was whinging about the scale of crowdfunding requests a while back and then just reposted one myself. I only ever repost if I've personally donated, and I try not to repost too often. That's the balance that works for me. Others can do whatever feels good for them.

I promise I'll stop sharing this soon, but we're really close to completing the current phase and I (think) unlocking the final stretch. This cost about what I make in a year as a freelance writer. Anything helps, even a share. <3 www.gofundme.com/f/bj-needs-a...

With numerous large fires already burning, the weekend fire wx outlook is concerning for interior PacNW (Cascades crest eastward). A dry cold frontal passage will bring strong winds/low humidity against severe drought backdrop, leading to "extremely critical" risk. #ORwx #WAwx

Fire weather risk outlook from NOAA SPC for Saturday. It shows a large region of elevated to critical risk, with a portion of eastern Washington designed as "extremely critical risk"--the highest level.
