I saw a female redhead duck chased by grebe from this marsh 3 times this year, but I never heard or saw her land. Turns out Redhead ducks are stealth nesters! And the female does it all! I saw movement on the edge of a reed bed and after a while, they all piled out! There’s always one mom! #Birds 🪶

A female Redhead duck in a marsh by the edge of some reeds with all her ducklings! There are green reeds around and hanging down above them and they are all in the marsh. She is facing and looking at us with all the yellow/brown babies crammed around her. One little baby is reaching up and biting her beak!

lol I first read The Master and Margarita when I was what, 9, because it had a cool cover. My sister's bestie had read Les Miserables about 20 times by the age of 12. Let us not even speak of Flowers in the Attic and Clan of the Cave Bear. Kids can happily read stuff of which they understand 40%.

The big literary discourse on twitter right now is whether The Hobbit—a children’s book that won children’s lit awards and was literally written for the author’s children—is appropriate reading for children or in fact such a difficult book most adults can’t “get their head around” it.

It’s frankly pretty aggravating how frequently people will be like “this thing isn’t actually new at all”, when it’s like I’m sorry but no, that’s not how history works, that’s not how linear time works either, patterns repeat and systems perpetuate but different events are in fact different

I also think it’s not unfair to point out that while it is absolutely the norm for cops to murder people with impunity, the precise context and nature of these specific murders does represent an escalation Things can be part of the same system and pattern while not being exactly the same

Given I'm not planning on traveling anywhere I've never been this year, I was getting a little bit worried that this would be the first year that I can ever remember that I didn't get a life bird (a new species for me). But some Roseate Terns in RI were there for me (below the Common Terns)! #584

Seven small silvery-white shorebirds with swallow-like wings, perched out on distant rocks in a gray ocean. At least three and perhaps all four of the birds on the tops of the rocks are Common Terns, with a black-tipped orange bill and shorter tails. The three birds perched on the rock closer to the water, and perhaps the farthest right most bird up top, look similar but they have a longer tail and longer black beaks; these are Roseate Terns, a new species for me.

This time of year, adult Soras spend a lot of time finding food for their babies.They love aquatic invertebrates. They see them from above and then snatch them with their beak. But when the big juicy ones are a bit deeper, there’s nothing to do but throw dignity to the wind and go ALL IN! #Birds 🪶

An adult Sora in mid plunge to catch an aquatic invertebrate of some type.The marsh is mottled browns as it reflects the surrounding reeds. Usually the Sora only needs to dip its beak in. But it’s deeper, so its whole mid and upper body are underwater! Just it’s mottled brown and white back third and tail are visible, and one of its huge feet is kicking up the water as it helps balance!

A beautiful evening here alongside the Nenana River just outside Denali NP in glorious Alaska. We start our journey home tomorrow but it’s been a wonderful trip with my mother, my brother, his wife and my two nephews. Going to miss the weather here which is about 50 degrees cooler than home. 🩷🫎🐻❤️
