Currently braving the Anthropic settlement call line on behalf of all self-published cowriters and y'all. 😂 These ladies are very nice but this system is a HOT STEAMING MESS and we are all due restitution for the stress

I’m in DC scheduled to give this talk today. But the organizers flagged slides in my deck that mention racism, structural gaslighting, New Jim Code and other themes that are off limits in the Land of the Free.

We are about 6 months away from my book, RESONANCE & RADIANCE, being released into the world. (April 13th, 2027!) RESONANCE & RADIANCE is a narrative nonfiction book about spectroscopy—the field of science that studies how light interacts with molecules. I want to share this book’s origin story 🧵:

A picture of the cover of the book: RESONANCE & RADIANCE: HOW LIGHT REVEALS THE CHEMISTRY OF OUR WORLD by Debbie Gale Mitchell

The book cover is a selfie of a woman (me) using an infrared camera

Adjacent: Donna Strickland, who became the third woman to receive a Nobel Prize in Physics in 2018, was an Associate (not full) Professor at the University of Waterloo at the time (she was also the first female physics prof there in 1997 (!) which I’m sure is unrelated to why she never went up 🙄)

In case you missed it last night: we are seeing reports all over the country of immigration surges and state violence. If you need whistles for your community, we will send you 100-3000 3d printed for free, and we will love doing it. 3dwhistles.com

A call for all Minnesotans: show up at your neighborhood mosque today; whistles, signs--We Love our Neighbors, We Love our Somali Neighbors. Show up, between 12 and 2 (prayer time). (this is the post you should reshare, buds).

strong statement from the Association for Human Mathematicians. "Releasing over 700 files at once is not a demonstration of scholarship, but a demonstration of power. We urge mathematicians to discontinue their work with OpenAI and to return to a vision of science that centers human understanding."

Like many scientists, I’ve been mulling over the impact of LLMs on our fields. I’ve not yet seen it articulated, but I think there is a largely unspoken “invisible labor underclass” framework at play.

Differences in housing policy post-Surge couldn't be more stark. Both councils passed a temporary 60-day notice requirement for nonpayment evictions. Minneapolis: the mayor vetoed and council centrists refused to override. On pace for record evictions. St. Paul passed it veto-proof. Down 15% YOY

September eviction numbers from @homelinemn.org: Minneapolis remains on pace for its highest number of evictions in decades, tracking 4.8% ahead of 2025 which was already a high-water mark. St. Paul is on pace for a 15% *reduction* in eviction filings year-over-year homelinemn.org/12175/evicti...

I'm increasingly frustrated that people who are anti-AI aren't being taken seriously, and taking a page out of my thoughts on why the anti-trans backlash got as far as it did I'm starting to think the anti-AI side isn't extreme enough.

What is the IceCube neutrino observatory? Neutrinos are elusive particles that rarely interact, but can create flashes of light when they do. Most neutrino detectors are giant water tanks surrounded by light detectors. IceCube is kilometer-long strings of detectors embedded in the Antarctic ice.

A rare solo #NobelPrize in physics goes to neutrino scientist Francis Halzen “for decisive contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin”. Full coverage here: physicsworld.com/a/francis-ha... 🧪⚛️

Exactly this. And in fact, many models *have* been created this way, and decades of prior machine learning systems *were* created this way, consensually. These things are choices! People are STILL working this way! It’s not just that a better world is possible — it already EXISTS. We can nurture it.

This is your occasional reminder that generative "AI" in particular could have been developed on public domain materials and/or licensed and compensated works but the major players intentionally, methodically and systemically chose to steal labor from working creative folks instead

This is infuriating. Can't stop thinking about it. For 35 yrs I've talked to experts, asked them for their time & expertise. IT IS WRONG to treat sources as Nicole was treated. Just shitty, one human to another, but also unethical and deceptive.

I'm the token expert voice saying that inconsistencies in victim's narratives are common in an otherwise brutally bad piece of journalism full of tropes about how not to report on sexual assault.
