We should probably look at a longer-term drawdown in Europe too—Atlanticism based on values, economic ties, and equality rather than the dead hand of a military deployment—but we're doing nothing of value in the Middle East. Just leave.
I am hawkish on Russia and think our spending time and money and credibility trying to run a Raj in the Middle East is making our job of rolling back Russian aggression much harder.

i think a lot of well-meaning people fall into a rhetorical trap where they take the bait and argue about male vs. female performance in sports rather than arguing for the value and dignity of women’s athletics generally. don’t let yourself be dragged into a bad faith framing.

Robert Borden Stan Account@bordenstan.bsky.social · 23h agoIf the academy gets pulled into coming out swinging against the biggest adaptation of Homer in probably a couple generations off the back of one prominent scholar deciding to be Reviewer 2 to Nolan's work, it will say, IMO, pretty damning things about academia's ability to foster public engagement.
Putting the snark aside for a moment, it does remind me of one of my and Nolan's favorite movies, "Lawrence of Arabia", which gets similar reactions from people who forget that the main character isn't supposed to be right all the time.

This isn't even a difficult thing to see if you watched the movie, because if there's one thing Christopher Nolan is actually bad at it's subtle political allegory. Don't get me wrong he's not Dark Knight bad here, but whenever his movies do social commentary they hit you over the head with it.

I think on the whole it’s totally fine in principle to urge people to be cautious in how they talk about AIPAC et al but some people really do need to get it thru to themselves that it is actually exceptional for one organization to spend >30M on a single primary like it’s nothing.

The framing that women’s rights are “minority rights” is especially revealing. Women are 51% of the US population. We’re not a minority. What women share with actual minorities is the idea that women are not fit to be full members of the political community.
