We should probably look at a longer-term drawdown in Europe too—Atlanticism based on values, economic ties, and equality rather than the dead hand of a military deployment—but we're doing nothing of value in the Middle East. Just leave.

This something I feel like the whole "it's the MIC", "Israel runs the government from behind" and "It's capital" people miss. Sometimes it's as simple as "The people in charge are just bigoted against the people in the region".

Ulster-Scot yeoman Southern farm boy: gee, if I please my slave-holding Cavalier masters by destroying the Union maybe I can get my own slaves! Wisconsin German '48er, driven into berserker rage by snorting pure uncut Hegel: the system of German idealism will be completed with Confederate blood

i think a lot of well-meaning people fall into a rhetorical trap where they take the bait and argue about male vs. female performance in sports rather than arguing for the value and dignity of women’s athletics generally. don’t let yourself be dragged into a bad faith framing.

the best HS teams in the country have multiple guys who will be in the NBA in a couple of years. they aren't normal high schools, they're basketball factories. but this literally doesn't matter. the value of women's sports isn't contingent on their performance vis a vis men.

If Haley Stevens wasn’t such a freak about Israel she might have won. All of the issue polling tells us Democratic primary voters have strong negative opinions about it, but that it’s not their number one concern. It’s literally something that helps you at the margins, and here the margin was 1%!

Elon Musk said lots of antisemitic things and shared lots of antisemitic posts written by antisemites and then sprinkled on some sugar with two nazi salutes on telly and Jonathan Greenblatt said "no he's alright, he isn't one" and now has spent over a year painting Zohran Mamdani as Hitler Part II.

Putting the snark aside for a moment, it does remind me of one of my and Nolan's favorite movies, "Lawrence of Arabia", which gets similar reactions from people who forget that the main character isn't supposed to be right all the time.

This is the same reason why The Godfather sucks as a movie: The characters all talk about being honorable family men but they don't act that way. Total failure.

This isn't even a difficult thing to see if you watched the movie, because if there's one thing Christopher Nolan is actually bad at it's subtle political allegory. Don't get me wrong he's not Dark Knight bad here, but whenever his movies do social commentary they hit you over the head with it.

I think on the whole it’s totally fine in principle to urge people to be cautious in how they talk about AIPAC et al but some people really do need to get it thru to themselves that it is actually exceptional for one organization to spend >30M on a single primary like it’s nothing.

Today, August 4, 2026, is the setting of Ray Bradbury’s short story “There Will Come Soft Rains” about a fully automated house continuing on after the family who lived there and the world around it died in a nuclear blast.

The framing that women’s rights are “minority rights” is especially revealing. Women are 51% of the US population. We’re not a minority. What women share with actual minorities is the idea that women are not fit to be full members of the political community.

many fascinating unexamined pieces to this article too. e.g. "what do you mean every tattoo parlor near camp lejeune has unmarked totenkopfs on their wall spreads." or "why didn't the seal mention that the scout snipers love to use the lightning bolts for their flags." mysteries abound
