She/her. Science media fact-checker, scicommer & independent researcher. If not talking about animals, I’ll be photographing them. I run the Animal Photo Reference Repository (@animalphotorefs)

I work at a public library. People who want to use AI seem to have no trouble doing so. People who don't want to use AI have a harder time. I crowdsourced and then finalized this document "How to disable or avoid intrusive AI" and then gave it a short URL: notoai.org Please pass along if it's useful

An aircraft passenger oxygen mask: a drop down passenger mask with air bag and yellow plastic mouth and nose cover, oxygen tube has been cut; Demonstration model used by flight attendant crew for passenger instruction. Has text on the side indicating that it's non-functional.

THIS. People educated enough in the specific subject to pull the data together don’t need LLMs; people without the knowledge to weed data from the bullshit are at the mercy of the LLM. They’re obsequious Dunning-Kruger machines. Designed to flatter midwits and the technologically obsolete.

So, ok, a thing about telling yr audience "i use AI for my info gathering/research but then I look over it and fix any errors" is that you unfortunately told me youve outsourced your knowledge base on this subject to the machine, and therefore I have no reason to believe you CAN catch those errors

@erinbiba.bsky.social sorry to tag you directly - are you taking book manuscript FCs at this time? If yes, I occasionally need to pass on work when I’m low on availability & try to suggest other fact-checkers. I would love to point them your way, but I’m not sure how to put them in contact with you.

Hey Seattle and SnoCo folk, bad air is rolling in from the east. East side of the state is already red and purple on the air quality maps. Good time to shut your windows.

Life advice for the ages. Those doing wrong want you tired and hopeless. But stay angry. And when a chance is in front of you: bite back. Digital plans for a real linocut. I'm anxiously awaiting a press to make this stuff possible with my RSI in my hands. #art #tiger #resist #linocut

The image is digital art made up to look like a two color linocut print. It features a geometric twisting snarling tiger. It's flanked by the text "Stay Angry" and "Bite Back" that follows the contours of the tiger.

if you don't have any money, you too can support artists by liking and sharing their work, telling your friends about them, reminding them to eat, taking out their trash, doing their dishes, watering their plants, feeding their pets, please help i need adult supervision—

Hyper-mobility problems: sneezed wrong yesterday while doing chores that took a lot of shoulder extension, now half of my ribcage is screaming. Now to go lace into a historically accurate corset to approximate the ribs heads in the hope the aggravation will calm down and I can function today…

I did a tonne of research so you don't have to. I talk about masking, air filtration, and air quality rating systems, & I give concrete suggestions to help you keep yourself and your loved ones safe. If you don't have this information yet, it's time to get educated. Wildfires don't respect borders.

For folks struggling to figure out how to deal with wildfire smoke, I put together some information a few years ago: apihtawikosisan.com/2023/09/miti...

Wildfire smoke clogs filters quickly /and/ N95s. It messes with the charge in meltblown filters as well as just being a physical blockage. If you’re using a mask outside in the smoke, replace it probably daily - and if you’re masking indoors for health reasons, have a separate mask for it.

Update: well that’s wild y’all. Filter on top is a clean, unused one fresh out of its packaging. Filter on bottom was the same when I installed it yesterday evening; this is what it looks like after roughly 24 hours of HVAC in Chicago’s blanket of wildfire smoke.

Photo of two HVAC filters. The top one is clean white, while the bottom is a dark, dingy gray.

A year or two I put forward questions about if zoos/sanctuaries had contingency plans for staff and animal health in heavy smoke or other respiratory hazard events like nearby teargas deployment. I was not taken seriously. I wonder what’s happening with animal welfare now in the midwest?

It's not enough to be against AI, you need to be pro art. You need to be a champion of the art you love, you need to share that passion and joy, and do what you can to support the artists who make it, because it's not enough to hate AI, to hate what it's doing to art and media; you gotta love.

"Is Disco Elysium like Homestuck?", asks a friend who knows neither, blissfully unaware of the academia-worthy cognitohazard packed in such a short sentence

Instead of fireworks, why not scare your neighbors the old fashioned way? Grow out your antlers and fangs, cultivate a thunderous beard of moss, haunt the night, and become a terrifying creature of legend and lore.

I found this game last year from a rec thread and bought it immediately! It is still one of my favorite games. Super cool novel mechanics, good sense of humor, so many puzzles! And a built in card game I still log in just to play a few rounds of almost daily. I cannot recommend this game enough.
