tweety fish@sifu.tweety.fish · 23h agoone really important fact that I think a lot of people who aren't super close to this stuff don't realize is that transformers/LLMs were NOT what OpenAI et. seq. (taking Anthropic as an OpenAI spinoff) were founded to work on, and were developed elsewhere. Caught them largely by surprise.
So much of the tech industry is driven by the dumbest kind of sci fi fandom. I really think that is it.

My theory on this is that most people aren’t mad at “woke” or whatever, they just experienced an upheaval of society through COVID and its aftermath and can’t actually put their finger on what’s bothering them. Woke is just a scapegoat for “I want things back the way they were”.

To me, this story is about bullying, and specifically a type of bullying where a powerless marginalized person attacks another powerless marginalized person. And I think this happens a lot in certain circles, because it’s too overwhelming to take on the real systems, so bullies attack allies instead

This is a good summary. AI had real risks that we are learning more about all the time and we should probably think about those and not the thought experiments a middle school dropout made up before llms existed and which involve a lot of hand waving involving nanomachines.
Yes. I think the consensus among US elite pundits and senior politicians that the way to protect liberal democracy is *not* to punish elite figures who violate its rules is wrong. A norm starting at least with the Watergate pardon. The opposite is true. You need to enforce the law and Constitution.

I think ‘rote memorization’ is underrated. Having a ton of shit laying around in your head leads to connections and being able to more precisely describe things.

Good piece that gets at something that's been nagging at me about what @himself.bsky.social terms "the Machine God metaphor": Buying into it cuts off other types of questions, lines of inquiry, and approaches to knowledge. And I can't help but notice which way of thinking empowers tech companies.
