Applies to Mpls too: “Half of [St.P’s] budget is spent on Cops & Cars (47%) & if you’re a person who wants to solve finances with cuts & you’re not talking about cutting either of those things then not only are you not taking the budget seriously, you’re not even taking your own premise seriously.”

i’m at the minneapolis city council’s public health, safety and equity committee meeting with no consent items. all discussion! seems to be since mayor frey doesn’t want MPD to answer questions about exactly how they overspent the budget by $20 million

Taylor has promised live all day coverage of the Minneapolis City Council's public health and safety meeting, where, in response to mayoral game playing, the committee chair has put every item on the discussion agenda. lims.minneapolismn.gov/Agenda/PHSE/...

One of the best pieces of evidence that Todd Barnette was asleep at the wheel was him floundering at council meetings. Public meetings are essential to government transparency. Giving it up because you're fond of Jacob Frey and hate a particular group of council members is dangerously short sighted.

the recent spectacles that come to my mind involving department heads at council meetings have been O'Hara and Barnette pleading ignorance to questions about what's going on with the overspending in their departments.

“Is this about having questions answered so that better laws can be passed, or is this about creating a spectacle?” Frey said. “I don't want a circus."

pointing out once again that the minneapolis police department have yet to answer these questions on line-by-line budget overspending from 3 months ago. brian o'hara tried getting out of showing up that day, gave no answers. he's gone now, MPD refuse to answer, and frey wants EVEN MORE power

one week ago today, brian o’hara was in front of the minneapolis city council, unable to explain to aisha chughtai why the police department was $20 million over budget this year as she went through line item by line item. and now he’s resigned as the police chief

Funding for our parks and the very financial foundation of Minneapolis are jeopardized because police spending is out of control. To avoid a reduction in our credit rating and future park service reductions the Mayor and City Council must take action to rein in spending. Please read and share.

instead of "gee whiz, must be hard when the city council isn't on the side of the police" we should ask, "why have you ordered MPD not to stand for questions in front of the city council, re: $21 million in overspending, at the same time you're requesting an 11% tax increase?"

Minneapolis is one of the most liberal places in the U.S., home to a specific brand of inclusive and effective progressivism. Minnesota is the birthplace of charter schools and anti-labor corporatists have convinced many Mpls liberals/progressives that public schools are bad. Both things are true!

i hope most folks know this already, but a reminder that any sort of "transformation" plan coming out of MPS was put together by like 10 high-level people and there are thousands of school-based staff and hundreds of district-level staff who are hearing about this for the first time

Based on 12,000 survey interviews, low-turnout-likelihood Republicans are comparatively anti-Trump, contrary to most analysis and punditry about the group after the 2024 election. Less engaged voters aren’t MAGA, but anti-status-quo www.gelliottmorris.com/p/2026-09-11...

Everyone is wrong about low-turnout voters

They care most about affordability, and disapprove of Trump’s job as president at much higher rate than engaged voters — including among Republicans

Somebody noted with respect to Dinner du Nord that Minneapolis has a giant underused Commons Park that DESPERATELY needs activation. I don’t mind closing parkways (especially if it’s not transit/biking/ped) but I’d love to see us use what we have.

This ("Pickleball on the Parkway") strikes me as an extremely weird use of riverfront infrastructure, but I'm reassured to find it's just a one-day event. Seems to have occurred last year, too?

Looking east on the River Road in Minneapolis, behind the downtown post office. As far as the eye can see, the entire street is blocked off with plastic barriers every 20 feet or so, and between the barriers, white lines have been painted to make pickleball courts. One corner of the court bears a logoish "Pickleball on the Parkway" label.

STRATEGIC ABANDONMENT by Jacob Frey's administration of an area where residents voted against him in 2021, voted to abolish the Police department, and voted against the "strong mayor" ammendment: 1. Denial of city services 911 response, garbage removal, street lights, snow removal, sidewalk use

The City bills us monthly to empty the garbage can in front of our business 2x a week, but it's often not done for weeks on end. I call 311 DAILY & leave messages at dept. of Solid Waste. Please join me – call 311 or the Mayor 612-673-2100 & ask that the City empty this garbage at 3032 Minnehaha!

A beautiful, mosaic-ed, City-Owned garbage can in front of 3032 Minnehaha Ave, over-flowing with trash, that the city refuses to empty, while charging the water-bill customer a monthly fee for twice waste removal from the can.
