what incredible beauty there is in just existing for a moment. to sit and breathe and have a pumping heart. to let any goals or expectations fall away. to think 'wow i am here.' life is an unfathomable blessing but in quiet moments of acknowledgment i think we can at least REACH for understanding

Geez, I wonder why you have the opinion of North Korea that you do. I'm sure it has nothing to do with the way Americans destroyed Korea, created a rift in its people, and put it under seige for almost a century, all while being fed anti-communist propaganda

Deterence is the old excuse for capital punishment. But no one believes the possibility of death deters anyone from doing anything. Men still ride motorcycles without helmets. The real reason is a lust for blood, a fetish for violence. Barbarism.

To succeed, Hegseth et al need us to believe they act from noble causes. His "warrior ethos," for instance. There's nothing noble about shooting a man to death on live TV. There's nothing noble about picking on "trannies." There's nothing noble about "testing for testosterone." It's barbarism.

Ossoff is one of the very few people adequately channeling Evelyn Normielib these days the base doesn't want to hear entreaties to our better natures, they don't want to go high while the other side goes low, they want someone to come on the TV and go "these people are garbage" he's good at it

Bill McKibben@billmckibben.bsky.social · yesterday

Figuring out why Ossoff is so effective is an interesting task. I think he's mastering a kind of stern dignity that is uniquely compelling in contrast to the clownish cruelty of the other side. I think the other person who's kind of hit on the same thing is AOC, though in a different register

I’ve seen Black people across social media platforms talking about picnics at lynchings and so many white people are in our mentions insisting that the last public execution was 1936 and that lynchings were “mob murder” not state sanctioned. So confidently loud and incredibly wrong.

This is something I've been saying for ages re: how centrists treat the left. If left-wing positions aren't popular enough to win elections, then left-wing voters can't lose an election for you. If left-wing voters can tip an election for you, their positions need to be accommodated.

...Assumption #4 has been driving me batshit, yet no one seems to realize it: if you're worried trans ppl might potentially harm your Dem candidate's chances, then YOUR CANDIDATE MADE A BAD DECISION! so why not join us in trying to get them to reverse position? juliaserano.medium.com/on-democrats...

screenshot from linked-to essay that reads:
Assumption #4: The elephant in the room that no one is talking about
There is a striking disconnect between Talarico, Turek, et al. — who have clearly made a political calculation that abandoning trans rights will help them more than it will hurt them in this election — and the many cisgender liberals I’ve encountered online who are absolutely freaking out over the possibility that trans people’s critiques and protests will ultimately tank said candidates.
Both of these things cannot simultaneously be true!
If you think your favorite candidate enacted the correct political strategy, then there is no reason to berate trans people for protesting it, as those protests should already be baked into your candidate’s calculations. So why are you berating trans people then? (Unless, of course, you enjoy berating trans people just for the sake of it.)
Alternatively, if you think trans people *are* capable of tanking your favorite candidate via our criticisms and protests, doesn’t that imply that your candidate (and their consultants and strategists) totally fucked up in their political calculations here? And if they did fuck up, shouldn’t you be reaching out and complaining to *them* (rather than berating trans people), in the hope that they might reverse their bad decision?

My MAGA focus group felt betrayed by tariffs, high gas prices, and inflation. I asked if there was any way Republicans could win back their support, and they replied only if they could prove that the pain had fallen harder on Black people.
