The Embodiment of the Paradox of Tolerance

@seltsamerweise.bsky.social

Minnesota transplant. Beard appreciator (moustache envier). I HAD A DOCTORATE IN INDUSTRIAL/ORGANIZATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY BUT ON JULY 1ST 2024 I BARGAINED AWAY MY KNOWLEDGE FOR MADNESS AND A VARIETY OF SILLY COSTUMES AND I HAVE YET TO REGRET THIS EXCHANGE.

The only thing I would add to this is that there was a very reasonable concern that folks wouldn't do this. It is freaking AMAZING to be wrong! (And I will need a longer pattern of support from folks before I stop worrying and/or pressuring party members and leaders to get in line.)

It gets an actual chuckle out of me seeing people on here say "now the TRUE test is whether the shitlibs can live up to their own words and line up behind El-Sayed!" only for Stevens, Whitmer, every prominent Michigan Dem, the DSCC, etc. to have endorsed El-Sayed before they can finish the sentence.

I always appreciate Birthday Betty’s announcements about birthdays! That’s because I know that Birthday Betty has no other job of any consequ… … I have just now learned that Betty McCollum is a sitting member of Congress. May Birthday Betty also learn of this development soon.

Happy 236th Birthday to the United States Coast Guard! On August 4th, 1790, Congress commissioned the building of ten cutters to start the storied history of the USCG.

and then these same people attack progressives as "not realistic." ok, what does the party establishment think is realistic? getting republicans to "finally see the light" and "repudiate trump" and support democrats that shit is more delusional than the most whackadoo bernie bro

want to be clear there are absolutely big differences b/t Dems & GOP, don’t ascribe to all-the-same, and that said, it’s awfully telling how many high profile Dems now profess to prefer a Republican in office than a progressive and how that appears to be driven by who is closer to their values

looking at the headlines and reflecting once again on how all the smart, hard-working, honest people I know feel like they’re going at least a little insane in our era of total Stupid Immoral Asshole ascendancy

this notion that people like haberman or jake tapper have some kind of conscience that is troubled by their corruption does not translate through their actions. these people don't care. the only thing they care about money, and that mostly comes through book deals. they. don't. care.

I have worked very hard to break away from my linguistic prescriptivist tendencies. Some exceptions remain, and they aren't going anywhere: "Come with" - WITH WHOM, YOU SENTIENT ANUS!? UNDER WHAT CIRCUMSTANCES? BELLS? JOLLITY? IT'S NOT ABOUT THE PREPOSITION, IT'S ABOUT COMPLETING A SENTENCE. 1/3

What is an extremely nerdy/obscure/specific thing you hate with a white-hot wrath?

Claire Willett: "one of my favorite things in the world is when someone hates a generally mundane thing with the sort of white-hot wrath you normally reserve for someone who has murdered your whole family"

Craziest part is that she just took office in January, now we're told the investigation started in April. So at least 50:50 odds some of this was happening while the rest of us were standing in the Minnesota winter protecting the local elementary school from being raided by ICE.

Sometimes I just sit around stewing about how ride or die so many Minnesotans have been, how they showed up through sacrifice big and small. They made the bad guys push through them at every step. Gave up nothing for free. And the best governor we’re being offered is Klob. It’s embarrassing.

and the truth is--a lot of us are going to have to sit with a lot of choices that feel imperfect. the point of "there is no ethical consumption" etc etc isn't "so don't worry" I'm doing my best to try to minimize harm as I move through the world in a way that allows me to maximize my own good.
