fruit enjoyer, they/them, 30s, you might know me from twt or ao3 or as burins on tumblr

something interesting in the Cleves/Walden debacle is the pervasive assumption that comics are a) necessarily an inferior, derivative form that can't be credited with the diligence of research or scholarship, and b) so vastly popular and lucrative that "real writing" must be protected from them

out it goes: my long post about Rachel Hope Cleves's claim that Tillie Walden plagiarised her book. It's long because Cleves's claim is much, much more bizarre than it looked on first reading. I'm not going to bury the lede here. Cleves's claim does not hold up. buttondown.com/thene/archiv...

stick a pin in this metaphor

…because these covers are a microcosm of the entire conflict; Walden's book is mostly built on writing and other objects left by Sylvia Drake, Charity Bryant, and others. Her work includes many elements from these records that Cleves does not refer to in her book, and many of her interpretations of those records are different from Cleves's interpretations, often intentionally so. In addition to her historical basis, Walden's book includes fictional dialogue and story elements that are original to her work, some of which are inspired by Walden's own life.

i am working on a very, very long blog post that could really have fit into a skeet: When someone posts that "this website/journal article/etc proves my dramatic claim!!!" and then does not link to the website, journal article, etc, it is because it does not in fact prove their dramatic claim.

Billy Bat sound effects thread! Brendon (@lettererbrendo.bsky.social) and I adore the way Urasawa draws sound effects, and are so excited to adapt the Billy Bat sound effects into English. For years, we'd talked about the quirks they have and how to replicate them. Here's a thread of comparisons!

I always keep an inhaler in my purse. Yesterday I decided to put it in my pocket for the day because of the smoke, and realized it expired in 2021. I called the doctor for a new one and the nurse on the phone said “I need to check mine, because I do the same thing!” So now I’m reminding you all too.

never expected dems to do any "get fucked, man" but probably something worth seeing is who can keep it to a basic "condolences to family and loved ones" and who feels the need to throw in some country club solidarity buddy buddy shit on top of that

What I’ll remember most about Senator Graham was his sense of humor and how he deployed it to move his policy positions forward. Though we did not often agree, Senator Graham was never disagreeable.

the internet should be the place we come to confess cutting all the sleeves off our t-shirts because we were left unsupervised, not the place we come to learn our lives and planet are being destroyed because rich guys are getting their gender affirming care from six data centers.
