Also, I've come to believe is that there are *NO* wrong choices when it comes to a loved-one with dementia so long as the choice is the best one for your emotional well-being. Our loved ones loved us and want us to be as happy as we can be in these horrifically terrible circumstances.

anyway character driven stories are not, in fact, easy to generate by a thing that doesn't understand human emotion
I've talked to a few journal editors who are concerned about similar problems re: anonymous reviewers. If a peer reviewer wants a little help & feeds your unpublished submission into an AI system, they've just shared your proprietary work & broken confidentiality. A nightmare to think about
Four days ago, a scientist was surprised by the news that Anthropic discovered new virus genes for making DNA. He says he’s been studying them for years—and feeding his data to Anthropic’s AI as part of his own research. Coincidence? Here’s my story. nyti.ms/3VSWayc
As a former pretentious little shit who grew out of it, rationalists (et al) annoy the piss out of me because they are adults with the mentality of tweens - they are somehow still convinced they are the greatest geniuses who have ever walked the earth. It is the worldview of an arrogant baby.
It’s the 43rd anniversary of the day the world might have ended but for one man, and I don’t have time to write that up, and anyway why try when @garius.bsky.social has done this...?
The Day the World Didn’t End
At the height of the Cold War, with alarms screaming, one Soviet officer stopped to think. It cost him his career. It may also have saved the world. The morning of the 26th September 1983 had started ...

Happy Stanislav Petrov Day He passed in 2017. As Encyclopedia Britannica puts it, “He is survived by his two children, two grandchildren, and the entire human race.” If you don't know his story, please take 3 minutes now to learn it. @gchalliance.bsky.social @docsforclimate.bsky.social
A woman was drugged, raped, and sexually trafficked to members of a fraternity. Two of the men involved were expelled. Five were given the opportunity to mitigate suspension by *writing an essay.* The dozens of other men who knew this was happening and said nothing? You already know the answer.
EDITORIAL | Cornell Won’t, We Will
The Editorial Board demands that Cornell stops protecting the alleged Chi Phi rapists through the University's opaque sexual assault policies.

Dropping frozen Jell-O shots in a fryer is how you add a new skylight to your house in a hurry.
I kept walking to my seat a few rows behind him. His staff or security are not happy with me. But Oz holds a position of public trust and is using it to make life unlivable for human beings in America. I should be the least of his problems. If you see Oz, let him have it. Let them eat crudités.

In an Uber. Driver having loud phone conversation with someone in Spanish. A little annoying, but it happens. He hangs up. Says, “Mi hermano. La Migra.” And starts weeping.
FFS. There is only one slab of granite that Americans want this guy’s name carved into.
Will add: there is no way - none whatsoever - that they do not know this.
lol my flight got diverted because of a medical emergency and they landed us in reykjavik in the middle of the night and deplaned us and sent us through passport control and then the crew vanished and then british airways sent us links to book an overnight hotel room but for a hotel at heathrow
If you knew me when the kids were little you remember me taking it to hell in IEP meetings every year. Kiddo was at a top ranked diverse school and Husbeast and I still had to play good cop/bad cop at every meeting. People overestimate their parenting acumen and underestimate damaging systems
@thehenryford's #FabricofAmerica exhibit had a subsections was called "Abundance," which charted the progression of textiles as a person's most valuable possessions to the fast fashion of today. An example, is this 1947 wedding dress made of a WW2 parachute. Women used
you did not have to hold your nose to vote for Hillary you did not have to hold your nose to vote for Biden you did not have to hold your nose to vote for Harris when we perpetuate this narrative we are doing the enemy's work for them! i am tired of it!
the thing that has always amazed me about the bombe is that it is a physical engine--spinning gears and plugboards--that does logic. that turing guy was pretty smart if you ever get a chance to visit bletchley park, do it
“but i talk to the llm and it can hold a conversation!” no, an llm quite literally cannot “hold a conversation.” that is an illusion bc you don’t know how the harness works. if you use an llm via a bare metal api, you’ll see.
llms only “exist” to give one reply at a turn you: x llm: y then the whole process starts over. there is no continuity. each reply is 100% fresh. the context of your previous “conversation” is included, hidden from you, in every request you make. continuity is an illusion
If Britain, which literally brags in song that it rules the waves, is incapable of the most basic code of conduct when it comes to seafaring, who even are we? The RNLI rescued downed German pilots in WWII. We don't leave people to die in the sea.
Antivax is a luxury belief. If antivaxxers were transported to an era where 20% of kids died before age 5, they'd be begging for the shots back.
I genuinely think that one of the biggest feminist challenges right now is that feminism was so successful that a lot of people can’t even imagine what the world was like before it.

yeah the basic issue is that to avoid upsetting the Trump administration, every organization combatting antisemitism has decided that literally only antizionism is antisemitism
More in my lane is how anti-semitism is now basically unregulated on social media, how any 14 year old can now find "Jewish question" content that was walled off 10 years ago... and all the energy is in banning Israel boycotts. I assure you, that's making this worse!
