Friendly reminder that Duolingo was initially concieved to trick people into translating articles for free, which they later used as training data for MTL algorithms. Duolingo's primary purpose has NEVER been about teaching you a language, even from the start! slate.com/technology/2...

If it doesn’t charge users and, so far, doesn’t serve them any ads, how does Duolingo make money? It tricks you into working as an unpaid translation service. At the end of some lessons, Duolingo will ask you if you want to practice by translating a real-world document. Which will turn out to be, say, a BuzzFeed article. By melding together enough stabs at this task from high-level Duolingo users, the app can render a surprisingly accurate translation. Which is worth good money. So far, Duolingo has contracts with BuzzFeed and CNN to translate stories from English into languages such as Spanish, French, and Portuguese. This service is already earning Duolingo hundreds of thousands of dollars a year, but von Ahn predicts he will be adding a raft of new clients soon. “The language translations market is huge,” he says. “It’s a $30 billion per year market.”

I just had a lot of fun programming a pixelart caustics reflection effect shader. This was far more complex than I anticipated, but in the end came out just as I hoped. Maybe I will use it in Vampire Tactics. It's so fresh when you have characters standing next to water and it shows on them.

Your occasional reminder: Never forget, just because a game is running in an emulator doesn't mean it's running correctly & even if it is running as intended, the default settings can still be completely wrong

Just as an aside, the worst thing you can do is assume mame / emu's are 'correct'. I've shown multiple times in the past where perfectly dumped games didn't run properly (Kikikaikai, Cannon Dancer) & the amount of 'default' settings in mame that are wrong is pretty big. Strider, Wiping, Blandia,...

Thanks to the helpful ps2 community and a very close call semi-brick of a rare variant, we now have verified dumps of every North American SPC970 mechacon 🎉 Any Australians willing to burn some life out of their eeprom for preservation let me know, lots of gaps there!

SPC970 Based MechaCon LIBeration testing is going well. Initially only V2 compatible, but now we have first V3 dump!! Still harsh on hardware, so careful dumping continues. Progress so far going well! Will share full write-up on how we got here soon!

Can we stop with the "AI in recomps is bad because it might reference leaked code" thing? Most emulators you love have relied on leaked SDK/documentation material at some point. The only recomp project sued thus far didn't. Don't be afraid to use the ethical argument. At least that one's correct.
