Feds used a piece of tech that simulates a cell tower so all the phones in an area will connect to it so they can find someone working on journalism. Other countries have cut down national security signals intelligence programs just at the risk it might collect journalists' communications!

US law enforcement agents obtained authorization to use a controversial cell phone surveillance device to find and arrest a college student who helped produce journalist Don Lemon’s coverage of an anti-ICE protest, court filings show.

For the people outside of TX, this is because Paxton has refused like 4 debates the TX GOP already agreed to, early voting starts on the 17th, and they are trying to cover up that their candidate is so bad that the second largest state in America is going to be voting without a single debate.

James Talarico has type 1 diabetes so when he gets sick he is out longer than most. Republicans spun a conspiracy theory his absence from a flu was actually a hoax created because he was committed to an Ohio mental hospital. Said mental hospital is now getting bombarded with right wing psychos:

The reason people love the Ea-nāṣir story is less the vitriol and more the fact that we couldn’t be more culturally different from a 4000 years dead Sumerian but we can totally relate. It shows us that no matter our superficial differences people are just people.

In an oft-told anecdote, my mom was friends with Sherrod Brown and I have fond memories of him taking me to Chuck E. Cheese. My email telling him to fuck off still probably got deleted by an assistant, but I hope he knows there's an actual former trans child mad at him and that it hurts his feelings

Remember, everyone, this isn't happening. Democrats are not campaigning against trans people. It's not happening.

Annie Andrews ad, campaigning against trans rights. She says "I don't support biological men playing in women's sports." Graphic next to her says "No gender surgeries for minors."

I feel terrible asking this, but my debit card got stolen and I don’t currently have the funds in my account to cover some upcoming payments while I sort the dispute out with the bank. If anyone could help spot me, I would really appreciate that! V: @Ian-Coldwater CA: $iancoldwater PP: @coldwater

The WHI is a good indicator because if the WH reopens soon with a full menu, that means power has been restored, roads are cleared, and supplies are available. Limited menu suggests some difficulties. Staying closed means things like hazardous roads, structural damage, and power loss.

There is a direct line from Newsom and Buttigieg running around the country a year ago saying "we have some concerns about trans people" to Democrats openly using anti-trans slurs in campaign ads today. It's why we pushed back so hard then. We knew where it would lead. And we know where this goes.

Bureau of Land Management just approved blasting through 100-foot canyon walls at the entrance to Nine Mile Canyon, UT, home to 10,000+ rock art images spanning 8,000 years. 47 historic sites sit in the blast zone. It's for oil tankers. Here's what's actually happening 🧵

The Bureau of Land Management approved blasting through 100-foot canyon walls at the entrance to the world's longest art gallery. So oil tankers can drive through it.

Nine Mile Canyon, Utah holds more than 10,000 cultural, historical and archaeological resources, including over 1,000 known rock art sites containing more than 10,000 individual images. People have used this canyon for at least 8,000 years.

The blasting happens in Gate Canyon, the entrance corridor into that gallery. Federal surveys have already found 47 historic sites along this one stretch of road alone. And it's not only the rock art. Threatened Mexican spotted owls use cliff habitat in the canyon, including areas near the proposed blasting. BLM did the minimum environmental review required and barreled ahead anyway, to move oil out of the Uinta Basin faster. Up to 1,000 vehicles a day, roughly half of them heavy tankers.

This isn't BLM's first swing at this road. Duchesne County tried the same realignment in 2015 and again in 2022. Both times, public opposition killed it. This time, BLM posted it quietly in March with no public notice, denied conservation groups' request to even weigh in, and approved it in April anyway.

It's the same playbook that just got this administration stopped at Big Bend National Park, except "stopped" is doing a lot of work in that sentence. There, a judge halted construction October 2nd, but only after bulldozers had already torn through ground Park Service archaeologists hadn't finished studying. They found pottery and artifacts underneath that equipment they never got the chance to protect first. A win in court doesn't un-crush what's already crushed.

Three groups sued over Gate Canyon this week. But a lawsuit takes months. A blasting crew takes days.THE HISTORY OF THIS ROCK ART

This canyon isn't one culture's story. It's layers of different peoples writing onto the same walls and the same ground across thousands of years.

Its rock art spans the Archaic, Fremont, and Ute periods. The Fremont lived here roughly 950 to 1250 AD, farming corn, beans and squash using small irrigation systems off Nine Mile Creek. Their panels show daily life and belief, abstract designs, hunting scenes, animals, people. Later, Ute people added their own rock art to the canyon, layered right alongside the Fremont record, in a style archaeologists describe as more dynamic.

The road through this canyon has its own history too. It was built in 1886 by Buffalo Soldiers, Black cavalrymen of the U.S. 9th Cavalry, to supply Fort Duchesne on the frontier. For 25 years it carried stagecoaches, mail and freight into the Uintah Basin.Nine Mile Canyon rock art in UtahBild

While I'm being irritable: The Dem backlash on trans rights is, infuriatingly, heavily informed by the fact that a lot of powerful Democrats read MATT YGLESIAS, who was so fucking bad at working with trans women at Vox that he transformed his workplace bigotry into a cornerstone of Sensible Policy

i've identified the Dockers store where Michael Tracy bought and then subsequently returned these pants after wearing them. i will be pursuing criminal prosecution.

This is fantastic news. The biggest problem with this is that if all the nations of earth create similar tax policies, the few billionaires who might otherwise flee will remain in your country for not having a more advantageous nation to which they can retreat. We'd be stuck with them.

New working paper: the Norwegian wealth tax was a huge success. The "exodus" of wealthy people never happened (less than 100 individuals left). Tax revenue increased by 71.5%. No changes in business activity or investment. www.nber.org/papers/w35854

Taxing Entrepreneurial Wealth: Evidence from
Norway, 2021-2025
Marius A. K. Ring
WORKING PAPER 35854|
DOl 10.3386/w35854
ISSUE DATE October 2026
Whether imposing higher taxes on business owners adversely affects business activity by constraining investment and inducing capitalist flight is a central question in the ongoing debate on how to tax the ultra wealthy. To shed new light, I exploit a series of related Norwegian reforms during 2021-2024 that increased dividend tax rates, removed migration-related capital gains tax loopholes, and nearly doubled the effective marginal tax rate on business wealth. These reforms spurred international debate and, allegedly, an "exodus" of Norwegian billionaires (Financial Times,
2023). While I document clear effects on migration, these responses are concentrated among the top 0.1% of the wealth distribution and mostly confined to 2022 and 2023. My results indicate that at most 100 individuals left due to the reforms. I find no evidence of significant outmigration or reduced inflows of startup founders or inventors. I estimate that absent any outmigration, wealth tax revenues would have increased by 75% from 2021 to 2024. Reform-driven outmigration lowers the revenue gain to 71.5%. My findings further show that outmigrating owners' firms remain economically active and do not reduce investment. In a broader set of analyses, I examine whether business outcomes are affected, regardless of whether owners outmigrate, since firms may reduce investment both due to liquidity constraints or distortions to owners' savings decisions. I compare firms owned by Norwegian individuals subject to the wealth tax with firms owned by foreigners and other tax-exempt entities. By merging historical ownership data from Orbis with the Norwegian shareholder register, I perform these analyses on both Norwegian and foreign-domiciled firms.
Across settings, I find no evidence that Norwegian-owned firms pay out more dividends or invest less after the reforms,…

10/7 is exactly Israel’s 9/11 bc it was the obvious consequence of their own heinous actions, they could’ve stopped it but chose not to, they’ve milked it for everything it’s worth until it lost meaning, and they’ve used it as an excuse to mass murder as many Muslims as possible. Literally the same

Thomas A. Fine@thomasafine.bsky.social · 4d ago

And yes, 10/7 is Israel's 9/11. Except that 10/7 was in many ways far far worse than 9/11. One way to understand this is to observe that 48,000 Americans being murdered is the proportional equivalent to 1100 Israelis being murdered.
