The OpenAI suit reinforces my view that there are two LLM genders: ChatGPT and Claude. Apple is very Claude. In this schematic, xAI is the incel in the corner, Meta is the 5’7” ChatGPTlet in the corner insecure about its ChatGPT-sculinity. Google is Claude-passing ChatGPT. Microsoft is ChatGPT lite.

I know this is daft, but it actually serves a purpose. It helps to 'weirdify' fascism, puncturing the narrative they want to create that their victory is inevitable and 'normal'. bsky.app/profile/ianf...

The surreal news of Nigel Farage's desperate stunt to avoid scrutiny for his financial deals backfiring and now having to fight an election campaign against Count Binface is what @jenmercieca.bsky.social would say is a way to weirdify fascism. It destroys the myth of their omnipotence.

Hey #nucleus nerds, the JCS Special Issue on the Cell Biology of the Nucleus is now live! This was a pleasure to co-edit with Megan King @luskinglab.bsky.social.

Our Special Issue: Cell Biology of the Nucleus is complete Explore our Toc: journals.biologists.com/jcs/issue/13... Our cover image shows the posteriorly positioned nuclei (Nup50-mCherry - pink) of notochord cells in Ciona embryos. See article by Peng et al. journals.biologists.com/jcs/article/...

JCS Cover: Posterior nucleus positioning in Ciona notochord cells. Co-expression of hCD4–eGFP (green, cell boundary) and Nup50–mCherry (pink, nuclei) in notochord cells in Ciona embryos. The cells and the nuclei are 3D reconstructed and highlighted by Imaris software. See article by H. Peng et al. (jcs264699).

Last Friday, we wrapped up #EESMechanobiology 🧪 Thank you to our participants, speakers, and organisers for making this symposium a success. Together, we explored how new technologies and approaches are advancing mechanobiology across biological systems. We're looking forward to the next edition!

Starting to write up the first mechanistic paper from my lab about regulation of endosomal PI(3)P. We see retromer tubules (Vps35) budding from PI(3)P positive sorting endosomes with Actin at the neck. When PI(3)P homeostasis is perturbed this organisation breaks down and cells cant recycle cargo.

The Thermo Fisher situation keeps getting worse. We've now collected 450+ problematic images presented as verification data in TF's antibody catalog. This includes: 🖌️ Dozens more images with duplications or painting 🖨️ Hundreds of blots that all share the same background (behold slideshow below)

The peer-review system needs an update. Biology Open did a cool experiment - contract reviewers in advance, and compensate them for a job well done. The results: it accelerates the process without loss of quality! Very promising. It’s not like for-profit journals can’t afford it…

Paying peer reviewers works. Expanded Fast & Fair experiment @biologyopen.bsky.social: • 5.5 vs 37.7 working days to decision with reviews • ~3 vs ~9 reviewer invitations per manuscript • no reduction in editor-assessed review quality • similar acceptance rates www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...

Scatter plot showing that Fast & Fair peer review reached first decision with reviews much faster than conventional peer review: mean 5.5 versus 37.7 working days. Most Fast & Fair manuscripts met the 7-working-day target, while conventional manuscripts were slower and more variable, up to 116 working days.
