Our mountains may not be as tall but by God they’re OLD There are no fossils in the Appalachians because those mountains are OLDER THAN BONES And Mount Washington may not be super tall but has some of the most extreme weather around!

Eel metaphors have been with us as long as we've been eating eels -- so a long time. The ancient Greeks certainly had their share. In his play "The Knights" Aristophanes (d.386 BCE) compares demagogues to eel fishermen who had to muddy the waters before they could make a profit. 🗃️🧪

Meme. Black and White drawing of Aristophanes. He is facing to your right, so you're getting mostly a profile of him. His hair is short and curly. His beard is long and curly. His thoughts are deep and curly. It is safe to assume that he prefers curly fries (or chips, if you like) to any other kind. He is wearing a robe over his right shoulder, and his left shoulder is bare. He will almost certainly have a curious tan line.

He is mighty intense looking. His eyebrows are sharpened against disaster, and his eyes are piercing like a shrike's dinner plate. His sallow cheeks suggest that he would rather think than eat. He does not look like a fun time.

The dark background suggests a nighttime scene, & you can imagine that he is staring at his neighbors, who are having a campfire in their back yard. There is mutton roasting, & marshmallows, & general hilarity. He is not amused, and is somewhat appalled at their choice of wines.

Meme text reads:
"Drain the swamp
&
Eat the eels"

Almost certainly the best thing I was ever told about owls was when I met an owl handler at an owl sanctuary and he told me that the wild owls who lived near the sanctuary worried about the tame show owls there and sometimes stopped by to leave them shrews and mice as presents.

The fabulous owl, Lady Jane Grey, with her handler, Pete, in Totnes, Devon, in 2016.

I’m saddened to announce the passing of my work colleague, The Zodiac Killer. While we were often on opposing sides of the business, I always enjoyed his silly little scavenger hunts.

Deeply saddened to learn of the loss of my dear friend Satan, the Prince of Lies. Though we often disagreed about matters such as the appropriate role of torture in the afterlife, I will most remember how his quick wit and affable nature made our weekly golf outings a ritual. He will be missed.

I had the privilege of working with Senator Dracula on my bill offering tax cuts to family-owned mortuaries. While we disagreed on much and his horrible embrace has left me unable to endure sunlight, I'll always remember his amusing little jokes about exsanguinating my staff.

In 1925, archaeologist Leonard Woolley was excavating the temple complex at the ancient city of Ur. That's the ziggurat in the background. As the excavation proceeded, he found something quite surprising: artifacts hundreds of years older than Ur itself. Let's talk about the oldest known museum.

📌As we celebrate the arts, and their ability to lift us up during these dark times, remembering the great John Bonham, who would have been 78 today. “The Hammer of the Gods” was the supersonic engine that made Led Zeppelin’s music roar and why upon his too-early death they broke up the iconic band.

Nothing to see here, just the son of the President marrying the daughter of the accountant of a notorious child sex trafficker who was best friends with the groom's father. Oh, wait, you didn't know Junior's current new wife is the daughter of Jeffrey Epstein's accountant?

When Dorothy wakes up at the end of Wizard of Oz, the threat to Toto seems to be gone— did Mrs Gulch not survive the tornado? Either Dorothy’s anger manifested the killer storm, or, more chillingly, when she kills in her dreams, the victim dies in real life.

Journalists who are still attending the WHCD this year don't seem to get just how much things have changed. It isn't 1998. You're not going to pose for cute photos with the West Wing stars at "nerd prom." You're enabling a regime who's assaulting your own profession & you're torching your career.

Sean Hannity, the Fred Flintstone of shameless propaganda, has declared he will no longer be a Catholic because he worships Donald Trump—and the money it brings in—more. Sean had to declare publicly that he will no longer be following his faith—because how else would anyone be able to tell?
