First, on this bit, Reeves and Starmer are culprits more so than Tory edu ministers - min wage hikes, emp NI, new workers' rights (all stuff I agree with in the abstract) all piled on at once... Yes, you're going to get a NEETs issue. That's pretty basic economics.

A language is generally considered endangered when children are no longer learning it, or learning it in fewer numbers than previous generations. Ethnologue currently considers 3,193 of the world’s 7,159 languages (about 45%) to be some degree of endangered.

I remember an older academic colleague warning me off motherhood “every child you have means a book you won’t write”. Which is not the spirit of this tweet at all but I only now recognise what an awful thing it was to say to me.

Sometimes in a library I imagine each book as years of an author’s life such that you are standing amidst uncounted hours of effort and concentration like some oasis of meaningful time.

I am extremely resistant to any version of ‘psychological effects of Covid are why politics is ruined’. Humans are just astonishingly psychologically resilient. People forget how common tragedy is, and how many friends people have.

Aside from the politics of ‘actually getting stuff done’ under Burnham (I think *hugely* significant to avert loss of faith in the system, not just Labour) there’s a fascinating pivot away from the usual people and way of doing things around Westminster.

Is “pragmatic” the new, “grown up” word? Andy, there’s nothing “pragmatic” about drilling for more oil & gas - to even consider it with the planet literally on fire is total madness. How many times must we say it will do nothing for energy bills or security? It would be an act of utter recklessness
