there's been a surge in support for the death penalty again, but people forget that we're not against the death penalty because we think evil people don't deserve to die, we're against it because the government having the power to kill someone they deem guilty can be abused by whoever is in power

Really weird to me how incredibly rich white men get to say stuff like "in three to four years we'll be achieving nuclear fusion from honey" and the stock markets go "wow, sounds great bro!" and the news just reports it with maybe a paragraph at the end of "critics say this is unlikely".

The problem with using an LLM for some narrow use case where you think it’s actually appropriate is that you’re using it in the context of a UX system designed to make you expand your usage and change your views of what is “appropriate”

This is the exact same kind of statement that Turkish or Indian diaspora groups make when people criticize Erdoğan or the BJP, it's just pure nationalism dressed up with social justice language. Which, y'know, is fine, it's what I expect, but nobody has to pretend it's anything different.

It’s embarrassing that the rabbi of Central Synagogue - one of the most prominent Reform rabbis in the US - is portraying Mamdani’s accurate description of Netanyahu as a war criminal as a sign of antisemitism. This is part of why young people take antisemitism less seriously than they should.

if you think something being "natural" or "plant-based" makes it healthy and something being made in a lab and loaded into a syringe is inherently dangerous, you're an idiot. you should lose access to your kids if you harm them due to this belief www.propublica.org/article/more...

Babies Are Bleeding to Death as Parents Reject a Vitamin Shot Given at Birth

A lifesaving injection given at birth to prevent severe bleeding has become collateral damage of the anti-vaccine movement.

:deep sigh: I see we are again doing "[romantasy] gives women an access point to fantasy, a traditionally male-heavy genre, both in authorship and fandom," as if there have not been women reading and writing fantasy for literal decades

My attitude is that we should expect the absolute worst case scenario, prepare hard for that, soldiers in the street and whatnot, Congress being abolished, etc, so then we can enjoy the Election Day where Don Jr gets maced outside a polling station and the Democrats win 300 seats

YOU - “But it didn't sound like one of my thoughts. Sounded like a lady.” KIM KITSURAGI - The lieutenant gives you a long look. ESPRIT DE CORPS - Sincere worry, officer to officer. He feels you need help and regrets that he doesn't know how to offer it.

Three things can be true at once: 1) Maduro was a horrible dictator and Venezuela benefits from removing him 2) Supporting the US illegally kidnapping leaders for regime change is a bad idea 3) Spheres of influence hurt small countries and we should not want that

By a vote of 76-23, S 1071 passes the motion to proceed to the motion to concur. Won't know who voted for this until the roll call is uploaded, but safe to say it passed with the support of at least 24 members of the Democratic caucus. (Rand Paul probably voted nay and Steve Daines has been absent).

Just a reminder to check for your name in this list of books that OpenAI trained from. If your name is there, they probably owe you several thousand dollars. OpenAI cried that if everyone eligible author files, the company will go bankrupt, so I'm alerting every author I have ever spoken to.
