Big thx to @victorpickard.bsky.social for joining us again to help us make sense of the variously capitalistic, oligarchic & authoritarian U.S. media system under Trump 2.0. The big take-away: robust democracies require robust public media. Now is the time to imagine & build otherwise!

your apartment, the sport of basketball, and the Republic of Korea are all social constructs. mere recognition of this fact does not actually make the question of whether you are standing in your own apartment, playing basketball, or a Korean national up in the air until settled by op ed editors

there are a lot of philosophical concepts that get egregiously misused out of the seminar room (and in the seminar room, to be fair). but in terms of sheer pernicious misuse "social construct" has gotta be top 5 somewhere and it's not number 5

Channel 4 has announced documentary “The Great ADHD Myth?” It “seeks to determine whether ADHD is a genuine neurodevelopmental disorder, or a social construct.”

Mamdani accurately said that Prime Minister Netanyahu is charged with war crimes, and people are blaming him for antisemitism. Trump baselessly claimed George Soros was funding Central American migrant caravans, which directly inspired the deadliest antisemitic violence in US history in 2018.

Mamdani: "When I make criticisms of PM Netanyahu, they are criticisms of PM Netanyahu. And what I shared were not even frankly personal assessments, they were objective facts ... it's a city where everyone needs to know that their belonging to it is not conditional on how they feel about the mayor."

Americans have more confidence in higher education than in big tech companies, and the gap is growing rather than shrinking. The higher ed-doomsday pundits need to get on board with the real vibe shift in public trust that is happening right now.

I look forward to all the reports & coverage about all of the internal problems & mistakes of all of these other institutions, in the same way that universities are constantly blamed (& blaming themselves) for “declining trust.” “Compared to what?” news.gallup.com/poll/712436/...

“Mamdani convicted Netanyahu without a trial” is one of the weirdest attacks on Mamdani, given that Mamdani’s call is literally for Netanyahu to stand trial for the charges against him.

In “The Odyssey,” a pointless war 20ish years ago broke the spirit of decency and fellow-feeling that kept society together, and now all that’s left is selfishness and cruelty, but we still have to try to learn and grow, salvage what we can, and move forward. Btw everyone has American accents.

Thinking about how so many people I know said Don’t Look Up was so stupid and over the top and ridiculous but my environmental scientist brother was like “Nope, that’s exactly how it feels”

AGAIN: the #1 predictor of a mass shooter is violence against women. Cops perpetrate VAW at higher % (though exact # unknown ofc) than the gen population. At some point our culture must take seriously the fact that this is a real red flag. It requires hating women less, though.

Wow. The ICE shooter in Maine asked his ex-wife to "to lie for him and to cover for his character." She said he was abusive and had previously reported concerns about him to his military superiors. He was also a volunteer firefighter, but was removed after several spats with department leadership.
