Yikes. Somehow I missed Ridley Scott's upcoming take on The Dog Stars (one of my favorite books). Wow, that sure looks ... loosely based. Damn. Could have been a lovely film.

Folks, margin of error is important. Understand your statistics. Someone shows you a poll, always look for their margin of error. Makes a difference. A two point spread between candidates with a nearly three point margin of error means there's no statistical difference between the two.

TW: body horror - Ok, so I'm not going to name names, but I just picked up a hold for a new horror book on Libby. Everything starts out fine. Then the author talks about black skimmers contemplating plucking out eyes. And I can't even...does this look like the face of horror, y'all?

Screen cap from the All About Birds website of a pic of a black skimmer, nonbreeding adult, as seen from the front. It is a white bird with black wings and head, orange feet, and orange beak tipped in black. Pic by Ryan Sanderson. This bird may look irritated, but it would rather eat crustaceans or fish skimmed directly from the sea.

I have a neurodiverse brain. One way that manifests is some fairly binary thinking when it comes to morality, especially as it pertains to public acts like running a media company or being a famous director. I haven't consumed Disney products for more than a decade, for instance.

Also a gentle reminder to everyone that non-binary people do not owe you androgeny, and you cannot (or at least, should not) make an assumption about someone's gender from their pronouns.

Trump has said: “We love our veterans. We are going to take good care of them.” Help me dig into the reality I'm particularly interested in hearing from current or recently former VA staffers, or, of course, vets getting care there. My Signal, cell, and email 👇🏻 www.propublica.org/getinvolved/...

Court records show that some jails in Colorado repeatedly extend how long they keep people with mental illness in isolation. The Boulder County Jail filed for approval to hold someone in solitary for at least 105 days over roughly six months.

Colorado Limited Solitary for People with Mental Illness. But Judges Still Routinely Approve It.  - Bolts

Despite a 2021 law meant to curb solitary confinement in local jails, judges almost always grant requests to isolate people with serious mental illness, often because there

Today, ICE murdered yet another person — a horrific reminder that police violence is systemic, and not the result of just a "few bad apples." As more Americans question the role and practices of law enforcement, what exactly does the state of policing look like in the U.S.? 🧵

Chart showing that U.S. police kill civilians at a rate (33.5 per 10 million) higher than other wealthy countries, including Canada (9.8), Australia (8.5), the Netherlands (2.3), New Zealand (2.0), Germany (1.3), England and Wales (0.5), Japan (0.2), Iceland (0.0), and Norway (0.0)

There is news I do not like to share. RIP Sam Neill. The New Zealand actor has had a prodigious career, notably in sci-fi. How could one forget his role in Event Horizon (1997)? But also Bicentennial Man (1999), Thor: Ragnarok, the Jurassic Park series, or his appearance in Invasion (AppleTV).
