“It came with the wind through the silence of the night, a long, deep mutter, then a rising howl, and then the sad moan in which it died away. Again and again it sounded, the whole air throbbing with it, strident, wild and menacing.” ✍️Arthur Conan Doyle, The Hound of the Baskervilles #BookWormSat

DOGS - Black Shuck by Georgina Warne 2012

Give me motorbike ghosts! Give me riderless BSA Bantams roaring rural roads. Give me phantom engines, crash replays. Let modernity supply spectres speeding as close to 70 mph as possible. May I be haunted by two-stroke steeds and faces forever obscured by goggles! – #CJosiffe, 1964 #Ghosts

Pondering pen names today. I've adopted John Steele as a main to separate my fiction from my day job writing, and I'm wondering if it's best to riff on ONE name as I genre-hop or if it's fine to use completely different ones. I appreciate this will be publisher led, ultimately, but I'm curious.

If you're ever looking for a fun show that flew under the radar a bit I highly recommend Wynonna Earp. Modern day fantasy western, great fun, great characters (some drawn from real history), and a starring role for Melanie Scrofano - bonus fun if you're a Letterkenny fan that's all I know...

Today's Scottish Programme for Government is shamefully lacking in transformative climate action.🌍 As the Met Office declared it the hottest UK summer on record, First Minister @johnswinney.bsky.social repeated his demands for lower taxes on oil companies.

Ten years ago, ‘You Took the Last Bus Home’ was published. It was my first collection of poetry and incredibly, it’s still going strong. To celebrate the anniversary, I thought I’d share a poem from it every day this month, starting with the title poem.

You Took the Last Bus Home

you took
the last bus home
don’t know how
you got it through the door

you’re always doing amazing stuff

like the time
you caught that train

An excellent way to help people cope with the never ending rise in food prices would be to relaunch the British Restaurants last seen in 1947. Just charge £2 for a meal with some meat, lots of green veg, some bread or potato, a pint of gravy, and a cup of tea.

The zebra mice are on an international foreign exchange programme going to school with the school mice for a few weeks. They are a little nervous but hoping to learn a lot about different sorts of British cake. (They’ll be in the new collection Saturday 5th Sept)

*sigh* An "AI" does not "escape containment", as breathless news articles claim. It is *told to do something by its programmers*, then it *goes and does what it's been told*, then the corporation it belongs to releases a statement to drive fear-based engagement and media laps up the lie.

In the tolling bell I hear a thousand dooms. Not just a new death, but all those parish deaths it has marked before. When we talk of living traditions, we do not think enough of the mortality implied in the phrase. We build and live atop ghost soil. - #DAKilroy, 1982

Y'all. I know you're tired of my running on about this, and I *want* to give you a break over the weekend, but I CAN'T fail these cats. They need a HOME. They're affectionate, relaxed and in decent health, and their issues are MINOR and EASILY MANAGEABLE. All we need is to find That Person.

ORPHANED CATS NEED FOREVER HOME IN NORTHEAST (PLEASE READ *ENTIRE* THREAD) My wife's childhood friend died Thursday, leaving his two *mildly* special-needs cats. The elder, Wally, is about 13. ABSOLUTELY affectionate cat; GLORIOUSLY dim. His only issue is that he poops in bathtubs if given a chance
