universities are not run by leftist profs they are run by corporate profiteer board members siphoning public $$ to tech partnerships "An Inside Higher Ed analysis of SEC filings turned up dozens of presidents paid handsomely for sitting on corporate boards." www.insidehighered.com/news/governa...

PC(USA) layperson. Only visiting this planet. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. Abolish ICE.
“When an alien resides with you in your land, you shall not oppress the alien. The alien who resides with you shall be to you as the native-born among you; you shall love the alien as yourself, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.” —The Holy Prophet Moses
It drives me crazy that even secular publications treat Evangelicals like “realer” Christians than the mainline. We are an older tradition! They’re the more recent extremist upstarts!
This is an incredible paragraph, bc it's not necessarily wrong (tho some mainliners may quibble with what "adapt" means here), but the way it's *framed* says a lot about the political subtext. Mainliners = defined by their place in the broader culture Evangelicals = defined by exclusive theology
I was able to skate by with an A- average in high school without studying or trying very hard and then I went to college and was no longer the smart kid and my GPA was trash for a while I eventually figured it out but it was a brutal wake up call
It’s not a class thing. Middle-class, working class, and poor white Americans don’t want to pay for medical care or other social goods that will benefit themselves if it also benefits Black people. It’s the swimming pool issue.
The bottom line is that the majority of upper middle class (white) Americans do not want to pay reciprocally or indirectly for the medical care of others especially non-whites.
I think that in the next gen we’re going to see a renaissance of public, progressive, fervent religiosity in direct response to shitheads like this. The “sky daddy bad” schtick is tiresome and obnoxious and people are curious about what a good, righteous life looks like beyond praxis
On CNN, El-Sayed is asked about this Trump post. He says it represents "two different visions of America:" "Two people who don't like each other but are joined in the interest of making billions of dollars off of you. Or, two people who genuinely love each other, enjoying some panacakes together."
When is the last time your local Presbyterian church denounced burning down a neighboring homestead and stealing all the sheep? Has it ever?
I think a lot of y’all just need to find and go to church.
In fact I actually think this is immensely corrosive The idea that the thing to do in life is take on your fair share of the task of social production in exchange for your fair share of the bounty is just totally moribund, no one believes in that because why would they
Why do elder millennials (with no connection to the military) talk about GWOT like it was a world war level societal trauma?
to be abundantly clear, murray rothbard endorsed david duke when he ran for senator, viewed black people as inferior, and had a tenuous-at-best relationship with liberal democratic institutions

thought for a minute "wow they really care about scottish church politics" before i realized
Also, Jesus willingly goes to his own death, it’s his entire plan! I never understood this bizarre fixation on responsibility for Jesus’ death, it’s him! “No man taketh it from me” John 10:18. If you believe in his divinity then you can’t say “It’s a real shame Jesus was martyred.” Thats the point.
Every human institution, especially the religious ones, have their own issues, but I think it speaks well to the Presbyterian Church (USA) that somebody with my history and personality feels so accepted. Both our pastors are ex-Evangelicals, so when I say they get it, they GET IT.
Imagine if you mailed the IRS a check to pay your taxes, but they left their mail unopened for years and then arrested you for failure to pay taxes. That’s effectively what ICE is doing to increasing numbers of people now; people out of status only because of GOVERNMENT delay.
The best time for Progressive Christians to loudly and disruptively make a stand about our beliefs was 1990. The second best time is today. This will feel uncomfortable for many of us. That's okay. We must make deep amends for how badly we have failed in our public witness.
"I support armed invasion and takeover of any free small country by the nearest dictatorial superpower, because to let them remain free is imperialistic" is such a harebrained take, yet one I've seen so often on and off this site
DSA types turning up their nose at Bulwark types should remember that they got their officially desired policy with USAID and by the time the consequences are over it’ll make Iraq look like a holiday picnic.
Matt Walsh complains that Nolan brought his obsession with nonlinear story telling to the Odyssey, undercutting the original's narrative. The defenders of western civilisation, folks.
This is, and I am not even joking, going to fuck up so many hyperlexic kids. I got accused of plagiarism because I used the word “porous” in a sixth grade paper and that shit sticks with you, if not on the permanent record, then in the childhood.
oh come on
I don't believe in academic freedom for dipshits.
I’ve repeatedly defended Prof. Wurman’s academic freedom to be wrong without consequences from the University of Minnesota or the State, despite calls for punishment. Ilan, responding to a colleague without tenure, like this while relishing in the dismantling of academic freedom broadly is wrong.
This is a common refrain, but I don't think it's true, at least not at the moment. The problem is that when liberals *do* advance a positive vision, we're condemned as illiberal by other liberals (when we advance social justice). Or we're dinged as utopians (when we promote, say, open borders).
Canadian firefighters hauled ass to get down here when half of Los Angeles was on fire last year. What a characteristically classy way to repay that favor.
"If Canada will not manage its forests to prevent these fires, the United States will look elsewhere, and act on our own, to protect our people,” said a group of U.S. lawmakers. globalnews.ca/news/1196860...
I believe with my whole heart that RFK jr doesn’t care if people die from these kinds of illnesses because he thinks only weak people will perish. Same way I believe he sees autism as a contagious form of degeneracy. He just wants to weed out society to suit his wretched worldview
CDC is no longer surveilling outbreaks caused by campylobacter, cyclospora, listeria, shigella, vibrio and Yersinia. What could go wrong?
Just as with immigration, moving right on this issue only legitimizes the conservative position, shifting the Overton window without attracting any new voters. The numbers of swing voters that would switch their vote to a Dem only if they oppose trans people in sports is basically nonexistent.
