This is an incredible paragraph, bc it's not necessarily wrong (tho some mainliners may quibble with what "adapt" means here), but the way it's *framed* says a lot about the political subtext. Mainliners = defined by their place in the broader culture Evangelicals = defined by exclusive theology

I was able to skate by with an A- average in high school without studying or trying very hard and then I went to college and was no longer the smart kid and my GPA was trash for a while I eventually figured it out but it was a brutal wake up call

It’s not a class thing. Middle-class, working class, and poor white Americans don’t want to pay for medical care or other social goods that will benefit themselves if it also benefits Black people. It’s the swimming pool issue.

The bottom line is that the majority of upper middle class (white) Americans do not want to pay reciprocally or indirectly for the medical care of others especially non-whites.

I think that in the next gen we’re going to see a renaissance of public, progressive, fervent religiosity in direct response to shitheads like this. The “sky daddy bad” schtick is tiresome and obnoxious and people are curious about what a good, righteous life looks like beyond praxis

Every human institution, especially the religious ones, have their own issues, but I think it speaks well to the Presbyterian Church (USA) that somebody with my history and personality feels so accepted. Both our pastors are ex-Evangelicals, so when I say they get it, they GET IT.

Imagine if you mailed the IRS a check to pay your taxes, but they left their mail unopened for years and then arrested you for failure to pay taxes. That’s effectively what ICE is doing to increasing numbers of people now; people out of status only because of GOVERNMENT delay.

The best time for Progressive Christians to loudly and disruptively make a stand about our beliefs was 1990. The second best time is today. This will feel uncomfortable for many of us. That's okay. We must make deep amends for how badly we have failed in our public witness.

I’ve repeatedly defended Prof. Wurman’s academic freedom to be wrong without consequences from the University of Minnesota or the State, despite calls for punishment. Ilan, responding to a colleague without tenure, like this while relishing in the dismantling of academic freedom broadly is wrong.

This is a common refrain, but I don't think it's true, at least not at the moment. The problem is that when liberals *do* advance a positive vision, we're condemned as illiberal by other liberals (when we advance social justice). Or we're dinged as utopians (when we promote, say, open borders).

Canadian firefighters hauled ass to get down here when half of Los Angeles was on fire last year. What a characteristically classy way to repay that favor.

Just as with immigration, moving right on this issue only legitimizes the conservative position, shifting the Overton window without attracting any new voters. The numbers of swing voters that would switch their vote to a Dem only if they oppose trans people in sports is basically nonexistent.
