I seem to have my reading groove back; have finished a fourth book from the Hugo award best novel nominations. They are all very good, of course, but the stand outs for me are The Incandescent and The Everlasting. Both have a lot of energy, both technically fantasy, but very different stories.

Non-Irish People, I want to ask you something. The less you have a clue what I'm talking about, the more I want your take. In Ireland, there are two crisp brands called Tayto, and both have a mascot called "Mr Tayto". Which of the two do you prefer just on vibes?

The first Mr Tayto to choose from. He is a man with a potato head in an all red suit with a flat red hand with white band around it. He smiles with a bit open mouth grin.The second Mr Tayto to choose from. He is a man with a potato head but the roundness of the potato extends more into the body shape. He wears yellow and black stripped trousers and a red jacket. His hat is all black. He has a single black line for a smile.

Last night I attended the cast and crew screening of Rogue Trooper by Duncan Jones. It was utterly incredible. I don’t know the franchise and had no clue what it was about , even though I recorded a very short voice sequence used in the film. I can honestly say it’s an amazing movie.

Having some feelings about Assassin's Creed which are probably too wordy to post anywhere sensible. Hoping @outsidextra.bsky.social makes a video explaining the financial decisions behind whatever the hell they've been doing recently that makes the games measurably longer without being better.

The features they have added from more recent games are tiresome, like, why do you want me to keep playing your game after I've finished the whole plot? What do you get from that, game company? I'm not giving you more money or anything. It's like the Marvel movies - you never have a real ending because they gotta cliffhanger all the time, which just means you never feel finished, ever. Shadows was even worse for that because they've decided to remove all Precurser content, all modern day content, and you aren't even playing a capital-a-Assassin apparently?! That's not Assassin's Creed, that's just historical fiction surely? You can spend a hundred hours waiting for the other shoe to drop and instead there's only stupid daily quests. I already have doom-scrolling on my phone to suck me in with no payoff, why is there doom-questing in my games now?? Plus, that many pointless extra quests means that the whole plot gets diluted down, reducing the emotional impact of each story beat because it's been so long real time since anything important happened. The new content in Black Flag is introduced so early that it's completely derailed the start of the game; I've got hours of side quests on the board, and I haven't even been shown all the game mechanics yet, not to mention remembering why Edward is making the choices he's making."
