Public Libraries across the United States are experiencing significant funding cuts with governments chipping away at social programs and the common good.

Hennepin County Libraries have had reduced staffing numbers year after year. 2024 was the first staffing increase for our library system since 2017. Meanwhile, the Hennepin County Sherrif's department experiences increased staffing annually.

Within this context of austerity cuts and huge increases in funding for policing we have to fight for dramatic escalation of support and funding for necessary public goods like libraries

Unhoused neighbors

Unhoused people are evicted over and over again in Mpls belongings destroyed, humanity denied. The supreme court decided recently that cities can punish people for sleeping outdoors, Simultaneously, climate change is leading to more days where it is unsafe to be outside.

Hennepin County Library banishes patrons for grooming in bathrooms, falling asleep, expressing frustration when security peers through bathroom stalls at them. (March 2024 data) Guards increase length of trespass (to 1 year) and threaten arrest if people return to the library before their banishment is over. Of course, criminal records make it even harder for people to access housing.

Libraries are key places for unhoused people, because they are free, non-commercial spaces and so the ways un-sheltered neighbors are treated in libraries is an important part of defending their lives and humanity.

It is imperative that Hennepin County Library changes their policies and practices to stop criminali

Hey folks, AJ here!

As many of you know, Rainbow Health was abruptly dissolved last Thursday. This shocking closure left us all unemployed (day of) with no severance or even PTO payout.

As luck would have it, one of my beloved colleagues just received horrible news that she has a thoracic spinal tumor. The timing couldn't be worse, as she'll lose her current health insurance at the end of July and already owes $1136.72 in medical expenses that insurance did not cover. Her surgery to remove the tumor is scheduled for August 5, so it would be great to raise funds before then.

Please help Latifah pay her outstanding medical bills during this time of need! Contributions of any amount help and are deeply appreciated.

While I'm somewhat in favor of traffic cameras for speed enforcement, a system of speed cameras is not entirely race-blind like their proponents suggest. Unsafe streets that encourage speeding are most often placed in neighborhoods with lower incomes.

Banned from campus for being a weeb

An email with the name of the university blanked out reading:
“Today, June 11, 2024, at approximately 3:55 PM, an individual entered the east entrance of the public library on Blank University’s campus. Security personnel observed that the individual had what appeared to be a sheathed samurai sword protruding vertically from their backpack.

The individual did not pose a threat to themselves or others. Security immediately addressed the situation and requested that the individual leave the library premises. The individual complied without incident and departed Blank University property at approximately 4:03 PM. No disruption or further incidents occurred, and the individual was cooperative with security staff.

As a precaution, the individual has been verbally trespassed from Blank University property, and a BOLO is issued across our safety collaboration network.”
