At what point can we just start blaming people for their poor critical thinking skills and information hygiene decisions? I’m as “we have to fix systemic problems” as anyone, but I feel like we’ve completely abandoned any notions of personal responsibility to the right. People need to be better!

It's absolutely insane we've somehow let the Covid recriminations debate become like "why didn't we reopen in person schools before there was a vaccine" and not "why did none of the trump guys go to jail for stealing PPE from New York hospitals in March 2020"
It’s crazy how, even if you are all in on the suburban lifestyle. There is apparently no appetite among greenfield devs for even modestly human centered design. No street trees? No street grids? No walking paths/green belts? No bike lanes? Nothing? The same exact topography from a century ago?

there is a strain of lefty discourse where you can’t come to any unflattering conclusions about the populace—those must be explained away by how they are being acted upon by capital—but I think you’ll understand things better if you understand capital can also exploit weaknesses it didn’t create
What the press is doing today is exactly what journalists Sam Kinch and Stuart Long famously said about Texas reporters in 1974.
this boils down to "the pandemic didn't actually happen but they still closed the applebees" which frankly i think is a trauma response by a lot of people that buy it - lot easier to be in denial that things were that bad instead of reckoning with 1.3m dead people [in this country]

Max Dubler 🏳️🌈@maxdubler.com · 4d agoI avoid the term “gentrification” when talking about housing affordability because it mostly describes *how people feel* about neighborhood change, not the change itself. For example, this author talks about how containerized trash pickup will “gentrify” NYC’s streets by replacing parked cars:

The USA tolerates far too mych social dysfunction. Yes, it is an issue that people use hard drugs in public. Surely there is a solution somewhere between allowing drug users takeover whole blocks or mass incarceration.

Having a dumpster to put your trash in is nicer than throwing your trash on the sidewalk, and I all but gurantee rich people in midtown will like having them.
There's a hypothetical made here that the rich people in midtown may get preferential treatment by being allowed to keep throwing their trash bags on the sidewalk while new dumpsters are forced upon everyone else, and folks, I find that to be certifiably insane.
