Our thoughts are with the family & friends of the person who lost their life in this crash. Highways do not belong in our cities, full stop. So long as Bellevue is a city of stroads, wide intersections, & freeway offramps, these tragedies will keep happening. They are incompatible with #VisionZero.

Who do you want to have the final say on street safety projects in historic districts: 1) The Seattle Department of Transportation’s Chief Transportation Safety Officer Or 2) Historic boards SDOT could consult historic boards to ensure a continuity of character without giving them a veto on safety

Just this year, the Pioneer Square Preservation Board blocked SDOT's proposal to prevent illegal car parking and improve safety and accessibility at 18 intersections in Pioneer Square. These intersections have a history of crashes, and SDOT knew how to make them safer, but were not allowed to.

A cool thing I spotted today: an electric cargo bike available for rental as part of the Montreal public transport system. A mid-drive motor and only $35 for a full day rental or $95 for an annual membership!

The principles underlying Vision Zero in Seattle are excellent but the culture change hasn't happened and so SDOT is continuing to build and rebuild deadly streets. Here is my 🧵thread of actions that can help Vision Zero back on track.

Some things I've learned about legislative advocacy, and I think my record speaks for itself. 1. Start by asking for everything you want. Stop preemptively negotiating against yourself. The process of passing the bill will whittle it down. Why started with a whittled down product?

With just a few minor modifications we could easily make Seattle Center accessible to cars. It's frankly quite problematic that people can't just drive up to the International Fountain or the Mural Amphitheatre

I don't understand why parking enforcement everywhere tries to treat their job as some sort of friendly negotiation to do whatever they can to avoid giving the car driver a ticket. Just literally write the ticket. No questions, no negotiation, no extralegal grace period... just write the ticket. 🫠

👮‍♂️📞 "you called 311?" 👮‍♂️📞 "Are you still at that location?" Me: No 👮‍♂️📞 "so you don't want to meet with police regarding this?" What the heck - just ticket the vehicles parked illegally in the sidewalk extension. It's not complicated. 311-27906359

Her direct quote: "You can propose a sales tax for public safety, and no one blinks an eye. You can propose a sales tax for roads, and no one blinks an eye. But when a progressive mayor proposes a sales tax for public transit, all of a sudden some people are very concerned about taxes."

This is the space between parked cars and same direction traffic with a small car hugging the centerline. Imagine it’s a box truck and there is traffic in the other lane. And they decided to pass you, on a bike. Tell me they”gave space” and it was a “freak accident”. Fuck all the way off.
