While I'm staring down the barrel of the Edinburgh Fringe programme, the fact that stand-up comedy doesn't have defined genres is a real problem in finding stuff. Conversely music is divided into thousands of micro genres to enable easy mixing

Typically good take from Pete. Literary devices or tropes (“this murder mystery exists to explore the world I’ve created”/“this fantastical concept is an allegory”) are interesting. Genres are just a marketing tool, and not a very interesting one.

Despicable gutter racism from a guy who couldn’t succeed in politics and who has no moral or political center to speak of. He’s, always, been a rank bigot and, in totality, a failure, but go on…

quite literally in the process of collecting and cataloguing and creating four separate collections to be archived and yes, THIS. (And once again, so grateful for archivists and librarians, y'all are the best)

Brendan Davey@brendandavey.bsky.social · 2d ago

Also, not everything is archived! Like... literally almost nothing in the grand scheme of humanities written work is archived. Someone has to dig through that crap and apply context to it! It really cannot be an LLM.

Taking Emirati blood money to fund your comfortable jobless DMV lifestyle in between Democratic presidencies: good liberalism, moderate, pragmatic Being an Arab doctor who goes to the gym AND the Masjid: intolerable authoritarianism, anti-American, pie in the sky, unprofessional

Travis@someforeignfield.bsky.social · 4d ago

It's considered bipartisan business as usual to treat the UAE as a good and trusted ally. Courting them and taking their blood money does not count as "authoritarian apologism" but God forbid you post something about Chinese trains

Divorcing a Jordanian princess to marry an American dietician TikToker………quitting your job as a foreign correspondent to become a police officer in South Carolina…….there is something very fascinating going on here psychologically.

DHH is one of those Ruby on Rails guys who made his millions, had like 8 decent ideas, got into a super expensive hobby, and couldn't handle it when the world noticed he's a massive piece of shit who is no longer relevant. You know, like Ruby on Rails.

Anil Dash@anildash.com · last wk.

Just in case you still use any Basecamp products, DHH is crashing out about his AI product gently pointing out that it’s bad for him to have extermination fantasies about the Roma people.

DHH tweet saying “This is why we need competition and open weights in Al. Imagine a world where only Anthropic sat as the moral arbiter of acceptable speech. Fucking ridiculous. (Grok of course did it no problem, same too with Kimi K).” when presented with his blog post using a slur about the Roma people.

“Almost every extremist attempt to socialise violence - fr Hitler to Rwanda, from Northern Ireland to Musk yesterday-sees extremists present as counter-extremists, to posit an existential threat & to propose political violence as necessary for community self-defence. Musk offers a paradigm case” 🧵

Sunder Katwala (sundersays)@sundersays.bsky.social · last wk.

Elon Musk's politics are indistinguishable from Paul Golding of Britain First [except Britain First is more coded on violence, while Musk has been more openly pro-violence as inevitable, necessary, legitimate since Aug 2025] The main pro-Hitler YouTuber "Zoomer Historian" is encouraged.

The radicalisation of Elon Musk (or at least his parroting of our views) shows that once people just swim in the same waters as us then gradually they’ll soon become us, bodes well for the future when every voter is heavily online

This is like when Chief Justice Kant, who now famously called the youth of India 'cockroaches', said in court that he wasn't interested in watching videos of police brutality and then later said that he didn't say that and it was fake news (like bollock it was) when people got pissed.

I can promise Mr Mohandas that it is not "Malayalam humor and satire" to say that leftists, Dalits and women protesting the regime "like rape" Its just the ugly hate and violence that lies at the root of Hindutva/fascism. As a fellow Malayalee who has long loved our tradition of mocking politicians.

In Australia's mega-fires of 2019-2020, 27 of 34 different rainforest types in South East Queensland potentially burnt "the wettest rainforest types and putative past refugia burnt more than other rainforest types. These results suggest that given drought conditions any rainforest could burn"👇

In the United Kingdom, local firefighting agencies have been overwhelmed by vegetation fires during repeated heatwaves. Numerous forest and moorland fires, including some in the infamously damp Scottish Highlands, continue to burn.

I am increasingly worried about the subtle—and maybe not so subtle—Islamophobic undertones of Stevens’ campaign. From this “local candidate” thing she’s trying to do to Clyburn leaning into the Bible at this rally and telling the crowd to pray for Stevens.

Parker Molloy@parkermolloy.com · 2w ago

The Stevens campaign's whole insistence that she's more of a Michigander than AES is clearly just racism, especially since the two of them were literally born in the same city.

Finally went through William Gibson's Wikipedia page just earlier, and one of the key details was rewriting the first 2/3rds of the Neuromancer twelve (!) times! (Another one: some random tourist leaves Neuromancer on a beach -> Hollywood producer picks it up -> Gibson gets a call chain of events!)
