My big realization: how many child-related trips (schools, daycares, libraries, parks) don't line up well with transit. Like here. Transit is barely faster than walking (cycling is on par with driving). I've always liked cycling, but I've learned it's even more important for car-free families.

driving: 13 minutes, transit: 30, walking: 36, cycling: 11

What do you think are some of the important oversights on families with kids in the transit world?

Canada's PM's fierce determination to appease separatists & fatten short term foreign fossil fuel shareholder profits with a pipeline is going to come with a huge body count. It's anti-leadership. Deliberate failure on the climate is the most irresponsible policy choice in all of human history. 15/

This is just brutal. “Mayor Wu’s administration had already identified the Mission Hill intersection where Louisa Gag was killed last week as a threat to public safety & had spent over a hundred thousand dollars to develop plans to make the area safer.” Then they didn’t do it. Killed by politics.

Wu Administration Shelved Safety Plans For Mission Hill Streets Where Driver Killed Louisa Gag - Streetsblog Massachusetts

"We knew there were dangers. We had a plan to make it safer. It is blatantly irresponsible for the city to make a deliberate decision to not follow through."

Toronto had the worst air quality in the world yesterday 🌎 In a world where transportation accounts for the largest share of CO2 emissions, getting more people to take transit instead of driving is a climate solution. Funding transit is a climate solution!

The Gordie Howe Bridge Fiasco lays bare the fatal flaw in Carney’s appeasement strategy: no amount of concessions will ever be enough. Continued appeasement will tie Canada ever-more-tightly to the US, no matter how much oil Carney pumps or how many German submarines he buys.

Heat got you down? Try some light climate reading! Here's a snippet from Very Serious Mark Carney's book Value(s). "Actions speak louder than words. Credible climate policies should cut emissions from day one to reduce the end point in carbon concentrations." (p.296).

Under the Canadian Net Zero Emissions Accountability Act (CNZEAA), the federal government is legally required to do three things:   1. Set science-based climate targets  2. Have a credible plan to achieve them, and   3. Regularly report on its progress.

I made an animation which shows the effects of air pollution on pedestrians waiting to cross the road, along with what can be done to reduce its harmful effects: stepback.gregdev.com Thank you to @ianwalker.bsky.social for the inspiration for doing so during a conversation a couple of weeks' back!

'Step back' - air pollution at pedestrian crossings

Every busy road produces a cloud of pollution you can't see. Where you stand in it matters more than most people might realise.

What if the 2027 City of Ottawa budget saw a re-think of how we prioritize infrastructure spending. Rather than focusing on roads, we focus on sewers, catch basins, and inlet control devices, backup protection valves. Not as sexy as roads, you say? You know what's sexy? A dry basement. 5/

CBC’s The National last night: Top story is the government announcing a new oil pipeline from Alberta and how it placated BC Then a story on the massive heatwave, storms and flooding in Ontario and Quebec Then a story on huge Manitoba flooding after they also dealt with tornadoes and rain 🫠

School Streets are coming to Ottawa 👏 finally. ✅ The good: safer, calmer streets for kids ⚠️ Needs improvement: a 2‑school pilot lacks ambition 🚨 Really needs improvement: process + cost barriers shouldn’t fall on communities Other cities are moving. Why aren’t we? www.ctvnews.ca/ottawa/artic...

Roads in front of 2 Ottawa schools could be closed this fall for ‘school streets’ pilot project
