the fundamental thing wrong with this ai-driven "hyper personalization" pipe dream is that your preferences are constantly changing, primarily in response to experiencing things that are different from your current preferences and expectations, through this little-known process called Living.

this is the ultimate end point of capitalism, ai will completely atomize everyone and there will be zero shared experiences. there will be no culture, only pure consumption. this must be resisted

Canada is refusing to issue ISBNs to books primarily generated with AI. This illustrates both the urgency of the problem of the growing flood of slop books, and also the toothlessness of addressing it on the honor system without there also being consequences for lying

Use of artificial intelligence
By registering with ISBN Canada, you declare that your book was created by a human author. You may use AI tools only for limited support tasks, such as brainstorming ideas, checking grammar, or formatting your book. You must not use AI to generate the text, create the artwork, or translate the book. ISBN Canada does not issue ISBNs for works whose content is primarily generated by AI. LAC is currently reviewing its policy regarding the use of AI content creation and our guidance is subject to change.

I can't complain about profs just expecting course reserves to happen by magic anymore. I placed an order for the class I'm teaching this semester and flagged it for reserve, but I just got an email back asking me to fill out the library's form. I HAVE BECOME THE PROBLEM. SHAME ON MY HOUSE. 📚

Today in why your librarian is stressed: academic journals increase in cost about 5% every single year while our funding continues to, at best, stagnate. And that's just the things we already purchase, much less the new acquisitions our patrons need or want.

Like... a library without books isn't a library. A library focused on a million things that have nothing to do with access to information eventually ceases to be a library. We can do other things, but if you have to constantly dismiss our CORE as not enough... idk man.

Boulder Faculty Assembly passed a resolution calling for no extension of the OpenAI contract. Vote was 39-8-1 after suspending the bylaws. Everyone at CU Student Government public comment has been fired up about their corresponding resolution, talking about trust and societal impact. So energizing.

Shared governance would prevent these errors. "By a margin of 9-to-1, she says, those who stopped to cast their vote with a dry-erase marker said they did not. “The people who decide we’re going to give this much money to ChatGPT are not the people who interact with students every day,” she says."

Saw a woman on TikTok who said she quit corporate at age 46 to become a beekeeper because “I would literally rather get stung by 10,000 bees than write ‘per my last email’ again” and you know what? I respect that

AP Stylebook warns against anthropomorphizing AI systems: “Avoid language that gives them human characteristics… Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.”

Artificial intelligence systems do not think, feel, want or understand. Avoid language that gives them human characteristics. This is called anthropomorphizing, when we ascribe human traits, emotions or behaviors to non-human things, such as animals or inanimate objects.
Instead, explain what a system does, how well it performs, who built it and who could be affected by it.

JCO is the only one who gets a free pass to stay on twitter because it's better for us, emotionally, if she's not here, but also it's worse for them, emotionally, if she's over there

LOOK AT THIS FUCKING SHIT. The easiest way to tell that trans women are women is that the right is so desperate to control what they do with their bodies. WE HAVE EVERYTHING IN COMMON.

"In '99, Smash Mouth released ASTRO LOUNGE, their most iconic LP. Their undisputed masterpiece is 'All Star,' a song so catchy, most people say they're sick of it. But they shouldn't be, because it's prophecy. It was composed by an Xer, but it's the definitive Millennial Song. [lifts ax] Hey, Paul!"

Telling your co-Directors/Co-instructors you had an idea? Mundane, could have come from nothing. Telling them you received a vision? Mysterious, implies higher knowledge. Anyway this is how I'm going to refer to all syllabus edits from now on.

"Zero procurement and zero red tape" so long as you verify your identity "using a government-issued ID and a selfie, through our verification partner, Veriff." Do not trust Instructure with this information. They have yet to come clean about what was stolen in April, and now they want more info?

The real value of a task manager is that you can experience the heart-dropping feeling that you have to be doing an amorphous something and instead of dropping everything you can just leave yourself a note like "surely I'm responsible for something I'm forgetting rn" and keep trucking
