Portland-based transportation planner Urbanism, economics, and ecology

Driverless cars would be great for seniors in rural communities, for example. But tech companies aren't going to make a lot of money catering to those people. The money is only going to be made in cities and by catering to wealthy people. That will most certainly come at the expense of transit.

I know we're all supposed to be herding onto the anti-data center bandwagon, but man, I worry a *lot* that it's going to overspill its borders & become a more generalized anti-wind & solar, anti-battery, anti-grid-infrastructure, anti-transmission, anti-anything mega-glonzo that leaves us worse off.

imo Portland needs a clear plan that candidates should be forced to endorse, and that plan should be to transform Portland into the US’s lowest carbon per capita city, and that plan should also be a (good union) jobs program

Currently at legislative town hall with Rep. Sanchez, Rep Travis Nelson, and Sen. Frederick. Rep Sanchez is in support of an income tax cut for lower-income people paired with a sales tax on "non-essential" items and (maybe?) an additional luxury sales tax. 1/

The cuts to bus service will get worse without bold leadership from the Oregon Legislature next session. Will we restore and expand public transit? Or will we continue to give billions of dollars to ODOT for their costly, polluting freeway expansions? www.wweek.com/news/2026/08...

‘Historic’ Service Cuts Are Now Arriving for TriMet Riders

The service reductions were first announced in January, as a state transportation funding package crumbled in the face of a Republican-led grassroots revolt.

Nothing short of a five alarm fire - to which the legislature is responding with “hmmm well let’s give ODOT three billion dollars to widen a freeway into the backyard of Harriet Tubman Middle School”

Update from @trimet.org today: Without additional revenue, TriMet's budget deficit will ultimately force the agency to cut in excess of 33% of its total service by 2030 or 2031. This is what a 31% service could look like:

Eliminating 30 of 79 bus lines (38% of bus lines).
Ending weekend service on many bus lines.
Ending service on many bus lines after 9pm.
Shutting down WES Commuter rail system.
MAX frequency goes from 15 mins to 20 mins (3 trains per hour vs 4)
Bus frequent services goes from 15 mins to 17.5 mins.

We had a chance today to show PDX that we’re fighting for their best interest in this deal and we failed. We failed every future city who will someday have to reckon with the next ownership group who will threaten, without evidence, to wreck their economy unless they pony up at least as much as us
