When you have more power than all but a few hundred other Americans, it's not unreasonable to expect you to deal with the same unhinged whackadoos your constituents also deal with every f*ckin day. Cowards.

For allies—I also take today to ask you to consider two things: One, while "when did you come out" usually means "when did you start telling people?" understand that it never ends. Every single time we meet someone new, we have to do the same math: Is this person/situation/place safe? Every time.

It's #NationalComingOutDay, and as always, my message is this: have a back-up plan, and if you don't have one, your safety is more important. You're no less valid or important if you can't be out. Your first, most important task is to survive. We'll wait for you. You matter more than a day.
